I was down in London today, for the Mizuno/FNUL 5km races in Battersea Park.

With a minimum entry requirement (for men) of 17:30, i was in the slowest race (there were three seeded "open races", and then the male and female elite races).

Ran 17:27 which i was very pleased with..... i wasn't expecting to be anywhere near my 17:19 pb, but i knew after 2km that i was on for something reasonable.

km splits were
3:20
3:28
3:29
3:38
3:32

Plan had been to run close to pb pace for 3km, then hang on for the final 2km, which is pretty much what i did..... just that poor 4th km dropped me off my pb.

A good confidence builder..... back there in April for another 5km on a faster course, so hopefully i can do some damage to my pb.

Same December was a pretty bad month for me.

First broke my nose playing football and then following week broke my big toe.

Anyone else been out in the snow and ice this week ?

Yesterday was great fun in the snow, stuck a pair of fell shoes on, wrapped up well and did a couple of hours, very slow, as the snow meant you had to work really hard.

Today was a bit yukky, with all the slush and black ice after the rain last night.

Went out on Saturday when the snow was fresh and was quite nice, although for sure makes you work harder.

Last couple days been on the treadmill, got some new trainers and getting used to them, didnt trust them on ice!

1h50 for the half should give you a good chance at a sub 4

Ran Sunday about 10am in country lanes and was fine. Ran 5am Monday and it was treacherous! No snow but loads of ice, Ran on town pavements and then on the seawall where it wasn't so bad....I guess the salt from the sea took care of the ice

Have been out early in this weather and generally it's been fine underfoot including 19k in -5 temps on Sunday morning.

But today was absolutely treacherous though, went out about 6am and it was an ice rink. Slippiest conditions I've ever ran in so had to call it a day before I seriously hurt myself.

We had a session last night in the Warwick Uni campus

The all-weather track was closed due to the weather, but ran on the roads with no issue.

The car park at Tesco Cannon Park was lethal though.

11 miles Sunday. 7 miles Monday AM. 7 miles tonight. Another 7 on Friday probably and then a longer run this Sunday (in Cov!). On the marathon mission for April

I've got several training partners building up to Manchester, a couple of them looking for sub-3hrs.

I've been toying with stepping up the distance, but i don't think its quite the right time just yet.

Currently training towards running my first marathon in Adelaide in may.

44 degrees here yesterday.

I just want to finish within the 6 hours cut off, but man this heat is going to make the training hard.

Hoping that I can ride it out and it has some benefit to my body tbh.

What will the temperature be in May? Mid 20s?

I think the average high is about 20 for may. So hopefully will be lower at race time.

Fortunately the heatwaves seem to last a few days and then the temp can drop off by 15-20 degrees. Today is 37 but then I'm looking at 5 days of 22-27.

So I'm just going to have to be a bit flexible and keep an eye on the weather app.

I get temperatures of 35-40c in the summer and aim to be out the door by 6am; anything after 9 is too hot. I’d suggest trying to do the same.

I know a fella who`s into doing all these crazy ultra marathons, like the Winter Spine in the UK, which starts tomorrow.

He did the Marathon des Sables last year and he used to go on a treadmill in a sauna as part of his training plan ( seriously ! )

He`d put tons of ice chips into the water pack on his hydration vest when he was doing it and also put a " frozen " buff around his neck, as he reckoned it helped regulate body temp ( don`t know if this is true or a placebo ? ).

He`s bald, so he even when he was training in the sauna, he`d make sure his head was covered to simulate being in the desert.

It obviously worked for him, as despite being nearly sixty, he finished in the top 1/3 of finishers.

He finished MdS? Very very impressive

I knew a guy that attempted it, got medically evacuated on the first day due to heat exhaustion

The MdS is indeed impressive, but its nowhere near as tough as doing the Winter Spine (or the summer Spine for that matter)

Starts tomorrow.

You`ve got to be a certain type of person to do that race.

I knew a lad that tried and failed to do the full length Summer one, ending up hosy with serious heat stroke.

Yes I think the one I knew focused too much on training for the terrain - he did a lot of running on beaches in this country. Don’t think they are quite as hot as the sands of the Sahara desert…

I had an entry a few years ago (Winter).

Went out on a trial weekend with all the kit i needed, and realised that to be able to do the race properly, you need all the lightest kit available, and i'd be forking out thousands for a complete new set of kit. So i pulled out.

That was the one mistake my mate made, the heat of the sand.

He completely overlooked it and on the first day he lost the soles of his trainers, as they melted

Fortunately he was able to get another pair from the support crew, as it`s really common !

Gonna have to balance that with a new job I've just started in the city, so I'll see how it goes.

I agree it's probably the best way to get around it though.

It’s either that or going out around 21/22:00 but it’ll still be relatively warm compared to the morning. Unless you’re used to it, i definitely wouldn’t try running during the day in that weather.

Did 13 miles round Cov this morning as well...... but around Cannon Park/Warwick Uni/Crackley Woods/Kenilworth Rd area.

Nice and steady, about 1hr42...... we'd all done hard sessions yesterday.
