After about 1 mile of running I get pain in my lower back and hips. It's a shame because it's something I used to enjoy.
Dont know what causes it, I'm ok on a cross trainer, and cycling. Tend to stick to them now.

Might be posture/slouching? I get it on longer runs. When i did the half marathon i was finding my arms were throbbing just from holding them in position to shamble along!!

I did think it was a posture issue, might take Clints advice and see a physio.

Bloody hell I think that a great time, I did it a few years ago in 2.8mins hardest part for me was coming down the Tamworth road and left onto Long lane ( I think it’s called ) and then back up it and back onto the Tamworth road
Thanks!
They dont do that bit any more but the backroads round allesley way were a bastard. I went to quick in the first 6 miles andnpaid for it. Well i paid for not doing enough prep too i guess but all things considered it was a good time for a first attempt i think.

Haha, tell me about it. It's around a 6 week wait for a GP appointment around here atm.

Nonsense isn't it. I had it with my knee, weeks to get in, weeks to get to see a specialist, more weeks for a scan. Oh it's too late to operate it's healing itself

Exactly. I rang up for an appointment for my daughter and was told there was at least a 5 week wait. I said well thanks but she'll be better by then.

That's a Tory NHS for ya.

Weeks to see a GP?? Bloody hell. We have to ring at 8am on the day to see if we can get through early enough to get an appointment and it's pot luck basically.
We can do that, but all you get is a phone call from the duty GP. To "assess" your problem. Then they tell you to make a standard appointment.

The only serious running I ever did was from the Old Bill!

Ah nice to see a running thread. Got right back into it this year and have set myself the goal of running 1,000 miles in 2019. Currently on just over 260 so am on course as we speak. 5km - 22.18 10km - 46.04, hoping to do a half in a few weeks and aiming for 1hr42mins but will take anything sub 1hr45mins to be fair.

I'm a committed runner. Started in my teens and was good at cross-country, but then wasted a lot of years playing Sunday football and drinking. Got back into regular running when I took up Muay Thai seriously. I'm now a Fell-runner (race over the mountains of the Lakes/Wales/Scotland on unmarked courses, where there is the element of navigation to also worry about, not to mention weather, terrain, etc..... in my opinion the greatest sport in the world!).

Also run occasionally on the roads, and more regularly at cross-country. Run for Cov Godiva... surely they have a shout with CCFC and CRFC for being the greatest sports team in the city.... much like the rugby team, they were top of the tree in the 60's and 70's. Not quite at the very top level now, but certainly at a high level and a match for the other famous teams in the area, Tipton Harriers, Birchfield, Cheltenham, etc. I believe in the national cross-country we were about 30th team (with a somewhat depleted team) and in the Birmingham Cross-country league (arguably the top league in the country) we were 6th in the top division.

On the roads my best 5km/Parkrun is 18:41 and my best 10km is around 39mins although that was on a cross-country course, so muddy, hilly, and not conducive to a fast time.

Long distances and off-road running are what get me going though... rather than being a natural athlete I'm more of a battler and prefer arduous terrain (preferably near vertical) to bring the speedsters down to my level.

Tomorrow is the Coventry Way Ultra... a 40 mile network of footpaths around Cov. Starts and finishes in Meriden, and passes through Kenilworth, Stonleigh, Ryton, Wolston, Brinklow, Bedworth, Corley.... there'll be about 250 racing... a combination of runners and walkers... although distances like this go beyond going out there and running as hard as possible.

Well the Cov Way was painful. Went well for 28 miles or so (Ansty-Barnacle area) then had a massive wobble which lasted until about Corley. This was dangerous as it happened as we passed through Bedworth which is where I live, so the temptation to bin it off was real!

But dug in and saw the job out.... 6hrs54.... not seen the results yet, but if the past results are anything to go by, could see me anywhere from 4th-12th.... won't know until results are published as it was a time-trial type event where you pick your own start time...

That sounds horrific. I remember looking around at 11 miles (of a half marathon) to see if I could get a tow from anything/anyone to just see me through to the end.

You are running like a machine, I've seen people who can barely walk wearing the t shirts. They do look fun, are you going to need any special training?

That's actually insane. How can you physically walk after?

I understand your comment... however I don't just rock up one day thinking I can do it... serious training needed to run it.... I've clocked up 40 weeks of 40 miles and 10000ft of ascent per week.

The mental side is equally hard. Once over my bad spell I felt ok again and if it had been 50 miles I'd have just ground it out. But once finished and my head let go of the idea of keeping moving, I could barely get to the car...

Monday did a very steady 2.5 miles power-walking on the treadmill, and last night I made half hearted attempt at a track session at Godiva. Still a little stiff but the only real issue is a blood-blister under my toenail which is very sore...

My mate tried to rope me in to one a while ago. Think it was in the Black Country somewhere.

Cheers nick it’s stuff like money bars and stuff like that I’ll stuggle with as I’m still overweight, I don’t think I’ll need any specific training and I think you can run around certain obstacles anyway

According to my wife it’s out near Hinckley way, she’s organising it with some of her workmates and is on about doing it for Charidee

I seen something last night which I think is good for some one lacking drive or inexperienced at running ( finger pointing at me) the british heart foundation are doing a marathon month in May, all you have to do is complete the 26.2 miles in the month so you can run as much or little as you want.

Yeah... no disrespect to people who want to improve their lifestyle or fitness.... but you see people wearing "finisher" t-shirts from wolf runs etc, and they are having to walk a 5k Parkrun.

Certainly not the "toughest challenge ever" as the marketing hype would have you believe...

The act of running is mostly very fucking miserable but the benefits are great. The buzz of finishing, the relaxed feeling the rest of the day, weight loss and a general sense of well being far out weigh the short term pain.

I think pushing yourself a few times a week is essential for keeping your mind sharp. Lifting heavy weights or HIIT also works but I find running more convenient.

I also rarely go past 5k. Mainly because I'm too lazy but also it keeps me as fit as I want to be and I've never had a running injury. Plus long distance runners look like raisins.
