Earlier in the season. Not that long ago.

No, I do not think Saka starts over Esse, based on that latter's form in the division for Millwall. I'd imagine Saka will be used primarily as an impact sub when games are stretched, which is when he's particularly dangerous.

Saka's under-rated by some. He doesn't carry a huge goal threat, but he's such a clever player, is unlucky not to have several more assists than he does, and is very good at opening teams up with clever reverse passes into the box, often to an over-lapping MvE. Add to that his tireless work-rate, and he's an extremely important player for us. Not in form at the moment, though.

It’s pretty clear they’ve always seen the value. You add loans to supplement your squad, not to plug gaping holes over it as we did in the SISU days.

Binks, Ayari, Rushworth and now Esse and YMK is 5 loans in 3 seasons.

For the first time since we sold Gyokeres an Hamer, loans actually sense for our current position. Any permanent signing we make needs to be capable of making the jump to the Prem… Players who will want Prem money right now. Therefore, you need players like Esse on loan who are league leading players to get us to the Prem.

I’m not sure we’ll make a permanent signing at all in this window unless there’s a standout player and likely record signing.

Two good punts so far. We have been crying out for cover on the wings.
Esse: Millwall say he moved too soon and needed another season in the Championship. Welcome to the modern world of PL clubs loaded with money. Crystal Palace did not want to miss out. How many of our Academy players have been lured away only to completely disappear among massive squads, never to be seen again?
Esse may be one we buy, if we get promoted, assuming we can get his career back on track.
Apparently, he tracks back well to add additional cover.
Yang: Thought of very highly at Spurs. Still young but was a star in Korea.
Be interesting to see how well they both will do in a more attacking side, rather than sides where defending is more emphasised.

Really don’t know what your issue is? He was a key player that helped us transition to where we are now and made us a lot of money.

Which is what I’ve been saying all along.

Sakamoto is a good player with good virtues but ultimately, is nowhere near consistent enough to be a top end winger in this division. He has his streaks where he’ll score and assist a few goals but then doesn’t do much.

Compare the relevant attacking stats with all his peers and he’s behind them all in most categories. His xA is good tbf and his crossing % is good but things like xG, chances created, shots attempted and a few other categories, he’s only ahead of JDS and MVE for shots only (equal xA). He scored 4 goals in 40+ games last year and is tracking to get probably 6, maybe 7 goals at a push.

Interesting.

I don’t think we’ll sign Neil on a permanent, if Sunderland have judged that he’s not good enough for the Prem, why would we sign him? He's not obviously better than Torp nor Grimes so struggling how it fits tbh.

@Jimmy87 did mention a European midfielder earlier on so wonder how that’s progressing.

You said that he and MvE is an over-rated partnership, which I disagreed with.

That was the only thing I engaged with.

When they are both in form, it's an excellent partnership between two players whose qualities compliment each others' extremely well.

Well it is overrated. Besides, something can still be good even if it is overrated.

MVE has more assists without Sakamoto than with him this season (and 23/24) so his performances aren’t linked to Sakamoto. In fact, for Sakamoto, the one game he didn’t play with MVE he had arguably his best game v Wrexham. They’re not codependent and frankly, if you can get a better RW like Esse, you improve the team.

People trot out the narrative that they’re this great partnership and we have to keep it intact. We don’t and this team needs more firepower and in this respect, Sakamoto is an obvious weak link.

That's something we'll have to disagree on then.

They're not co-dependent, no. And of course if you get a better player, and they fit the system, then you improve the team.

They're a great partnership, but that doesn't mean you can't improve on it. And Sakamoto's not a weak link, but that's not the same as saying he (or anyone else) can't be improved on.

To reiterate the point here, and to use a Football Manager analogy, he’s a 3 star player. He’s good, but not league leading.

And there you go, look at only the stats and ignore the other stuff. He has been an integral part of a team that sits 6pts clear in the league. The only stat I need, that and seeing him terrifying fullbacks
