I would be interested to know what people think Riochs job was? What's does being an Academy manager mean?

thanks for all the hard work Gregor and Mark but lets see how new guy does before we write it off as a terrible move.

perhaps new guy will teach the kids better technical skills at a younger age?

lets just hope it isnt a sign of academy in trouble.

I think this was always on the cards when Murray came in. Gutted for them. Rioch did a brilliant job.

Agree on all points...might bring even more to the Academy - I just know nothing about him.

Wasn't "the bomb squad" his 1st mistake by popular consensus ?

I dunno. I still think we're missing the option of Edge and McSheffrey, but if the aim was to change the team spirit you can't really argue.

Even if the new guy is better, I think this is a shit way to treat someone who has been consistently a bright point in our club.

I am guessing Pressely wants his ethos and style of play drilled into the players at every level.

Strange thing to do half way into a season. Surely the Summer is the time.

Should the focus not be on getting back to the Higgs then this.

Is what Pressley does with our first team the best way to develop young footballers or is it just a way of playing once your all round game has developed? I don't know.

How successful has our academy been
Level 2 status.

One player gone to the Prem where it seems he is not good enough yet.

The rest thrust into our first team too early and for too many games in the championship, due to our owners decisions.

Now they seem comfortable in Division 3

Is that what we should expect from a category 2 academy I genuinely don't know.

All I know us that the blue print suggests invest in the academy bring a player through sell him on.

Hence who runs the academy is probably the second most important staffing decision to make. They have realised this then made a change. Not sure what that says about the previous chaps

That is IF he has been pushed though surely?

I agree it would be shit if we had pushed him / sacked him.

Whilst I too would be extremely disappointed to see Rioch go, I am yet to see anything official, so unless i am missing it can anyone clarify if it has been confirmed yet?

It's worth pointing out a few things.
1. The EPP academy system is in its infancy and the effects of the scheme won't be seen for a while. Levels are determined by how much clubs can afford to invest in it rather than any reflection of the quality of current academies.
2. Some players have been fast-tracked into the first team squad due to financial constraints and transfer embargoes etc. Fortunately it has been fairly successful to date.
3. It's worth remembering that the academy was a complete mess before Rioch arrived.
4. Rioch reckons he's got a few more players in the system ready to make the step up.

Personally I think losing Rioch would be a blow. It's a reflection of the job he has done that the team is doing relatively well at the moment.

Yh just read the story on the CCFC website and Waggott says he tried to keep him, but it was a personal decision to go on to a new challenge. Doesn't say anything about where he is going.

Best of luck to him in that case. I'd trust that part of the good job he did was to have a system in place that allows his assistant to step up seamlessly, fingers crossed.

Just wonder if this Story that came out of Newcastle and Bigi played any role in this??

I blame SISU.

Just kidding - I think whoever the owners are this kind of thing happens in football if you're a success, and the Academy is a success.

I suspect he'll pop up at a 'bigger' club sometime soon. If he doesn't, then maybe there is room for speculation around the current issues, but until then I'm guessing it's mostly about salary.

sounds like hes left rather than pushed if we are promoting assistant?

Murray wasn't his assistant. Stevens was and imo has been as important as GR in developing and bringing through the local talent. Must say I'm not surprised, over the past few months I've got the impression that this has been coming.

I think it was Edge for one of the goals Bury conceded on Saturday who was practically waving the opposition though in an effort that makes Webster look like Des Walker in his prime! He had some decent games for us and is an older head, but he wasn't good enough.
