Two games stick in my mind on the first day of the new season that in attended results that the bookies cringed - 1975 Everton 1 Coventry 4 (David cross hattrick) We sang all the way back to Cov
1993 - Arsenal 0 Coventry 3 (Micky Quinn Hattrick) silenced Highbury

For me I would say:

Bobby Gould's first game in charge when we'd all but been written off. I think we beat Watford away on the opening day?

Cov 2 Spurs 1 - first game after the Cup Final (excluding the Charity Shield), Speedie's debut and an absolutely electric atmosphere. And I avoided being hit by a flying missile type bolt from the Spurs fans by a life saving couple of inches. Good result.

Cov 0 Forest 3. Can't remember the year. Mcallister's debut and an absolute shambles? We made Forest look like world beaters - probably the year they were relegated.

Best memory: 3-2 vs. Chelsea with two very late goals from Dublin. Sunny day at Highfield Road and will long live in the memory.

I always remember the pre-Roman Chelsea teams of the late 90s signing big names, even World Cup winners, with the media wondering if it will be their year... Then coming to Highfield Rd twice on the spin on opening day, and Dion sending them back pointless, with a reality check!

Yeh, that Chelsea game, I think they had a new defensive pairing of Desaille and Leboeuf, and Dublin and Huckerby terrorised them all afternoon. I met my Chelsea supporting brother (I know!!) afterwards, magic!

I remember walking away from HR after the second game, with some Chelsea fans coming the other way. I overheard some big Chelsea fan moaning, “it’s this fucking place”. “That’s right now fuck off”! (I thought to myself...when I’d got home safe and sound).

Yeah I remember that Forest game. First game I took my two kids to after separating from their Mum. Somehow they are still sky blue!

Kevin Campbell scored a hatrick, one of those players who always seemed to score against us, Arsenal, Forest and Everton he scored against us for, I'm surprised we didn't play Trabzonspor in a friendly so he could have scored for them as well

The Dublin hattrick on the opening day v Chelsea I remember well as it was my birthday. Last year v Scunthorpe too was memorable as although we lost, my daughter was mascot. Both glorious sunny days too.

The dawn of a new era - Away at Edgeley Park, Aug 2001. We all knew this would only be a brief departure.

I had big expectations for the season going into the 0-3 Forest game.
Was supposed to go straight home because me and the missus were going out, stopped of for a few to calm me down, made me late home, big row with her, didn't go out and I sat sulking all night, what a fucking childish fanny!

Chanting we'll never play here again.
Turned out to be true, though not quite in the intended way.

if that was the 3-2 game big shout out to Lightbourne, came on, smashed Lebouef, got booked but Lebouef didn't want to know after that and spent the rest of the game moaning to the ref about the Lightbourne foul.

That was the 2nd one with Desailly! We played the the year before with (I think) Frank Sinclair (he scored and pulled his shorts down) and maybe LeBeouf, Clarke or Duberry. For some reason I seem to remember Duberry playing. Anyway, Dublin got a hat-trick! We won 3-2. Year after Dublin and Huck scores with Poyet for them and we won 2-1. Missed that one, I was in Spain on holiday!

Yep this one sticks in my head, walking down rows of grid iron streets then turn the corner and the ground appears.... welcome to the championship! We have two sides of the ground and won easily, everyone thought we would piss the league.... oh dear

Getting beat by Boro on the opening day of our last season in the Prem. Their fans were taunting us with chants of 'where's your keano gone?' Thommo got sent off. It was fucking shit.

Similar to the aforementioned Forest game, the writing was on the wall at that point.

As others have said, Coventry 3 - 2 Chelsea with a Dion Dublin hat-trick definitely stands out to me. I had it in my head that Robbie Keane's debut - where he scored twice in a 2-0 win over Derby - was the opening day of the season... but thinking back it might've been a couple of games in?

Stockport away. First match in lower divisions. Went in the social club next door for a pre-match pint, said we needed to be members. How much is membership? 50p! How long for? Life long!

The stand had no roof, quite an eye opener. And Im pretty sure we won, too.

Beating Sunderland at home 2-0 in the Championship. They’d just come down and it was sweltering hot. We ended up beating them 2-0 with Eddie Johnson scoring, I think.

I remember their support being brilliant and zero crap about JH or them getting relegated decades ago.

I went to the last game of the 1975 season - Burnley away (David Cross hat trick) - an answer to quiz questions about the only player to score a hat trick on the first and last day of the season (top flight), We all got drunk in Blackpool, and SC (shall remain nameless) got himself arrested for trying to free his bestie (who'd been nicked for barking at a police dog!)

Didn't some of their losers opt to cover our crest with tape? I'm sure Lebeouf hurled his shirt to the ground at the final whistle.

Great games and great occasions, but Abramovic was already in place and splashing the cash, so those victories were even more laudable.
