Couple years back we got a single storey extension on the back of our house which included a new toilet and utility etc. And we were very happy with it all......then we discovered we had rats under the newly created crawl space under the toilet floor......turns out the builder hadn't backfilled the new drain channels sufficiently and so rats could enter via the gap.
No big deal.
Pest control killed them off with poison and apart from the horrible inconvenience of one of the bastards dying under the floor which stank to high heaven, I dragged it out, scrubbed myself with antibac and then filled the drainage gap access point with chicken wire and expanding foam.....job done.......

....until now......my neighbours to the back of me have just completed their extension with more new drainage channels and bingo.....the cunts are back but this time they are up in my kitchen extension vaulted ceiling and there is no obvious access points so I can only guess they must somehow be coming up from underground into the wall cavity ang getting into the ceiling space.
I've been setting traps in the garden and have killed 3 so far (not using poison as don't want them dying up there) and have just discovered that a neighbour 3 or 4 doors down is putting monkey nuts out for the squirrels so will have a word to get them to stop it asap but how the fuck do I go about finding their access point and then blocking it.......

Anyone with any suggestions, experience, or advice please........its a horrible feeling hearing the dirty little bastards scratching around above your head.......stressful too

Can only think of digging the patio up to expose the whole drainage channel or taking the roof off to work out how the fuckers are getting in......what a twat

....help

My Mother In Law had exactly the same issue, we tried everything and nothing worked until we dug up part of the garden and found that part of the drain had dropped (fractured) right underneath the wall cavity. The little buggers then came up through the cavity, made a small hole under the kitchen units, and had free run of the house. If I was a betting man, I would say you had a very similar issue.

Yeah, DL has it spot on. You desperately need to find the entrance point. You can put down all the poison you can throw at them, but there'll be more to take their place. And get your neighbours to stop being idiots.

Exactly Mark, we kept putting the poison down, we would kill a few then more would turn up, the reason I decided to dig just outside the kitchen was because the kitchen started to stink and when I pulled away the Plinth I found about 5 dead rats under the units, they deffo have an entrance point that is hidden.

Jesus that's a serious problem to find 5 dead ones under your units. You can usually guarantee there's another 25 live ones rattling around. Glad you got it sorted though mate. It's one of those things that stresses people out really bad, and understandably so.
Good luck with it JHFC. Find the entry point and you'll beat the little shits.

Have a problem with mice in my flats. managed to seat the entry points to my place off so they cant get in here anymore but its horrible to hear them scurrying around the walls. My landlord doesn't want to know any the residents association are useless. Paid near £30,000 in rent for this place over the last few years and they can't even get rid of pests. I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell me that me and my generation are lazy and entitled though.

Where I grew up we had mice move into the chimney breast and the attic, and birds nesting above my bedroom.

All in a standard day's living.

Not like it used to be, you know!

Cheers lads.....im just recovering from a proper full on dose of flu which has absolutely floored me so the digging will have to wait a few more days.....but the killing will continue.
No poison though......not after the last time......cant believe one dead rat can stink so much.....

I'm using a variety of the head smashing and neck breaking Tom n Jerry type traps.......strangely satisfying when you spot another victims leg sticking out from the end of the box.

I had them behind the walls in a flat and they were getting into the actual flat, I wouldn't see them but could smell that they'd be about (if that makes sense). Woke up at 3am one summer morning and went into the kitchen to see a 30cm + running off. I shouted at it and got the council to come out and put some poison down and threatened my landlord, the rat never came back and my landlord let me out of my contract 5 months early.

Ha ha.....nah...not the nogzy, the old bill.

......just to add the tazer threat was all a big misunderstanding and I bare no grudge whatsoever.....whilst i was completely innocent of any wrong doing, i would have initially reacted the same if i was a copper in the same situation...

Fuck that mate keep telling her she's gonna have to get spaded or just take it in her arse for the rest of her life

When we had our last one the professor looking after my wife said no more after 3 c sections and four tough pregnancies and she said while you are there do you me to do the job but I felt guilty and said I would get done

it’s a doddle takes about 15 mins and I didn’t even know he’d started, the bit I hated was after having to go back to the hospital to the special room as I had to walk through the bit where the people are struggling to have kids go and they look at you like you are showing off. Also the material in the room is a bit dated

Quick update as I had several PM's about this asking about potential solutions (I guess some folks don't like to go public with their rat problem)

State of play: wifes dream kitchen is currently in bits.....wife has been in tears........the wooden floors been ripped up & we've got a fucking massive trench down through the concrete to the drains/sewer sited under the middle of our kitchen......

...to date I've spent £700+ on CCTV drainage surveys, pest control, contractors etc.....and only 90% sure we now know the issue.......an old drainage gully that was already buried under the previous shitty flat-roof extension that was then demolished when we got our new extension built.....

Hopefully it will finally all be sealed up & we can start to re-build our kitchen later next week when the concrete sets.....

a total fucking nightmare......and as yet, no cast-iron proof to pin the blame on anyone in order to re-coup costs......but I'm fuming so someone is going get a bill.....or a fractured soil-pipe rammed up their hole....
