Its Akin to the Welsh division.

Celtic being TNS
To be pedantic - Hearts have a bloody good shot at winning it this year, Celtic look beatable, Rangers are miles off

If there is a season where there can be a title race involving another side it is this one

What are the reasons for the decline of Scottish football? My view is the reorganisation of European club competitions as subservient to the CL is the main one but what are the others?

Before the amount of TV money in the game took off, the resources of Scottish clubs was a lot closer to those in other leagues. As the gulf in commercial income has grown so has the gulf in performance. Celtic are a pretty successful brand internationally which has kept them somewhat competitive but even they have struggled of course.

Rangers of course destroyed themselves in a tax dodging scam, which is ironic given their sectarian politics

Celtic fan I work with says the rot started with Souness at Rangers in the 80s.

They were an attractive prospect as they had loads of money and European football (which English clubs did not have), so lots of top English players went there.

He thinks that lots of the other clubs saw their success and tried to follow the lead, so rather than invest in young local talent, and the means required to develop it, clubs invested in bringing in players from elsewhere. As well as hurting the number of good players coming through, it also meant that good players would move out of Scotland, rather than develop locally.

So short-termism, essentially (bane of the modern world).

Tell you what is even more gutting… Martin was basically a shoe in for the Leicester job in the summer what a laugh that could have been

It was great when Celtic had Larsson and co and Rangers had Michael Mols and co. Now its just dire. No point in lying about the standard, most Championship fixtures will be a better watch.

Look at these line ups from 2000! Nearly all of these players would be the best player in the SPL if there now.

Celtic last year where very close to besting Bayern last year. It's this season only and it was a recruitment fuck up during the summer where they failed to sign anyone until the last couple of days.

That’s probably why Rangers ended up going to the wall though and why Celtic were also perilously close to doing the same in the 90s - Scottish Football was and never will be sustainable enough to have players like that playing in it during their prime

Of course that's the reason. It was still fun though.

I think there's some truth in that, when was the last time we went for Scottish talent Gallagher?

And let's not forget rangers got the Europa league final not long ago

I'm sure it just slipped your mind of course

Depending on your definition of talent we paid Ross County for a left back who never played. Before that, I think the last Scotsmen we signed from that league were David McNamee and James McPake

Agree with @covcity4life and yourself, it's a great watch normally but all excitement has been taken out of it. Hardly any cards/reds etc now and the last one was a borefest.
The last one was but usually it's full of tough tackles and great atmosphere. It's one of the few remaining games that reminds me of the good old days

Boca Vs river plate same. Always fun watching even if the teams not on top of their game.

Hell no, them signing Aaron Ramsey and then him missing the pen that cost them the final was one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I do like to think about it a lot as it makes me smile.

So pipe down.

This will probably only be a part of it but I'd imagine the hoarding by PL clubs of academy players can't help.

Traditionally the SPL was a league which gave young talented players a platform to build their careers and now I can barely think of any which are coming through that are very highly rated.

Now they're all being swept up by PL clubs in the academy before they get a chance to actually break through.
