I'm assuming Ireland is still under contract and we're actively finding a replacement no. 1. We can't afford to have 4 first team keepers. It's a shame for the lad, it may just be that he was unlucky that he is the only one out of contract

Ireland is out of contract as well

we do not have one GK on the books that has a contract later than 30th June 2011

Maybe Westwood is signing on :p

But seriously all we currently left with is rookie Lee Burge who has just signed his first professional contract if Ireland is out of contract aswell.

Potential replacements
Alex Smithies
Joe Lewis
Joe Murphy
Ian Turner
Andy Lonergan

typical cov fans, a few good performances and its a scandel if we dont sign up

hes done well..nothing spectacular

i think most footy fans gut feeling is that hes not good enough for a promotion challenging team, deep down you know this,be honest with yourself!

hopefully west signs up,if not im sure thorn has plan B ready to go

good luck quirke in your future endeveours

Has this story been confirmed anywhere else? Not to question Cov Mad, but I'd like to see the story in more than one place.

Protest at first home game. Thorn out. If he can't get the board to sign this guy up he should go. After all 1/ He is a local lad 2/ He might be good.

Bow Larks. Have you seen him? He is too small to be a Goalkeeper. He pulled off a brilliant save today.
Cannot kick a ball. Although his stepover against reading striker last week was impressive.

But sadly he needs to be at least 4 inches taller if he is going to do any good as a goalkeeper.

I'm having a sit-in protest after the Kings of Leon gig. It'll be at least 100% more successful than the last protest!

Not sure why after just a couple of appearances we all assume to know far more about his qualities than thorn/oggy/harrison - yes he's done well in a couple of games but as said before we're only going to have 3 keepers and will be after a new number 1.

Same goes for danny ireland - we have seen very little of him and everyone is saying he's shit!

Find cov fans seem to have to categorise everyone in the amazing/shit bracket and nothing in between

Kind of agree Mo but at such a young age, a local lad and would be reasonably cheap, I would have thought he was worth at least another year. In fairness despite not doing much wrong, he probably isn't ready for the first team yet,but would have been worth retaining and loaning out to a L2 club to gain some valuable experience and looking in another 12 months how he has/hasn't progressed. Seems a strange one so I can only assume that wehave great(er) hopes for Ireland/Burge and that there simply wasn't enough places to go round in such a specialised spot. Shame and good luck to him wherever he ends up.

He is too small. I know Kevin Keegan was too small but he is not between the posts except when he picks the ball out of the net.

So hes too small to be gk but is great at step overs?? Hes in the wrong position. Maybe hes an ideal replacement for King??

Thorny knows what he's doing when it comes to young players. I trust him on this one. Mind you, i bet Quirke would be a world class 5-a-side keeper!

We've gotta trust thorn and big oggy. They know what they are doing. We all feel sorry for the lad, but does that make him a good keeper? Yeah he's got potential but we are after a number one, and I don't think it's ever gonna be Quirke unfortunately. Sentiment don't come into it in my book.

I agree they obviously have not taken this decision lightly as the world has just disappeared for the lad when he heard the news i bet. However we now need two keepers next season unless westy is making a turnaround and staying......:thinking about: maybe not...

Feel a bit sorry for the lad as he seems to be a nice kid and all that, but I don't think he's tall enough to establish himself as a top keeper.

All the best to him though.

This. Looks decent, but really is too small to make it here.

Did pull off a very good save mind yesterday.

Height is only an issue if you can't leap. Quirke seemed to have good leaping ability which negates the lack of height. (5ft5 Basketball player talking here!) :D

I'm mainly a shooter. The point I'm trying to put across though is that smaller people are normally much more agile meaning they can react faster and jump higher/further. You only have to look at Jorge Campos to know that. 5ft6 keeper that played 129 times for the Mexican national team!

I don't think we should write the lad off just because of his height, especially considering how good he's played when called upon.

My netball gag backfired then - gues sthey have those positions in BB too :)

Haha, to be honest, in the UK, nobody seems to know the actual positions (Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Small Forward, Power Forward, Centre) so I've gotten used to being the 'shooter' or 'bloke that takes the ball up' :D

Good question, i've not seen this in any of the papers, surly the CT woold have gone with this story, or have i missed something in the last week????

either that or thy're saving the 'Cov keeper leaves on a free' headline for someone else!!

I get the argument but Jorge Campos is a bad example! Completely overrated. Got lucky in that Mexico had an abundance of crap keepers at the time and he was loud and confident. I prefer the Casillas example. Has probably been consistently in the top 5 keepers in the world since he broke in to the Real team at 16 and is now probably in the top 2... If not 1!

I'm sure that height has not been the sole consideration here. This won't have been a decision Thorny will have taken lightly and i trust his judgement on it. If he has a vision of our goalkeeping situation and Quirke isn't part of it there's no point keeping him around to burn up wages.

Quirke had this to say on Facebook on Sunday "One door closes another opens hey...lets see what the next few months bring! Thank you familly, friends and CCFC supporters who have helped me over the years!!"
