Seppala – speak to us!

Press release for immediate issue

‘Disgraceful!’ That’s the view of Coventry City fans from the Keep Cov in Cov campaign who will be
protesting outside the offices of the Sky Blues’ owners, the sisu hedgefund, at 1 Red Place, London W1K 6PL, Wednesday 28 August 4.30pm-6pm, followed by a meeting for London-based City fans in the neighbouring Marlborough Head pub.

After Sunday’s game against Preston, played at Northampton’s Sixfields ground, the Sky Blues remain bottom of League One with fans still overwhelmingly boycotting the move to Sixfields. Sunday’s attendance was just 2,068, compared to last season’s average of over 10,000 at the Ricoh Arena, and season ticket sales have reportedly fallen by 90%. Despite much talk from sisu about identifying potential sites for a new ground closer to Coventry, there are still no concrete plans in place for a return to the City which has been the Sky Blues home for 130 years.

Keep Cov in Cov Campaign Coordinator, Michael Orton, explained: “the move to Sixfields is opposed by the vast majority of City fans and is clearly unsustainable. We have got to keep making our voice heard and this is what we will be doing this Wednesday”.

The theme of Wednesday’s event will be a continued plea to secretive sisu boss, Joy Seppala, to meet with City fans – something she has so far refused to do. As Michael put it, “Seppala is the person calling the shots. It’s high time she faced up to the people who are suffering because of her actions – Sky Blues supporters”.

Anyone interested in joining the protest this Wednesday, 28 August 4.30pm-6pm at SISU’s office, London W1K 6PL or the meeting afterwards in the Marlborough Head pub can get further details by emailing [email protected] or call/text 07716 406 221.

Can it be any other day then midweek when most people work?

Jon - it's a hard call to make. The first one was on a Saturday so had more people but everywhere was very quiet and media weren't interested at all. Strangely, smaller numbers but when offices are open has a much bigger impact. The late afternoon timing has developed so people travelling from Cov can get cheap trains and don't need to leave till early afternoon, and London based City fans can come straight from work. Not ideal but it's a hard call

Ah ok, the 'immediate press release' bit made me think this was the initial announcement.

How do you know Seppala is even going to be there? And if she is, how will you know who she is, if she were to leave the building and come out to you? Without this bitch being there, a protest is going to be a waste of time I'm afraid. She just AIN'T bothered about the fans!

HH - campaign approach is if we do nothing then nothing will change so Wed is part of the on-going nagging away, reminding sisu, FL etc that we won't give up and will keep fighting. With the Premier League starting it's even harder to get media interest but, especially doing stuff in London, means we don't disappear off the radar completely. These things work on different levels. I'm always very happy to hear new ideas but do nothing isn't one for me nor are pie in the sky 'we need thousands to protest' etc etc.

Michael's dead right here. I was able to catch the end of the last London protest and it was great just walking up to the Football League building to see the front railings covered in sky blue ribbons etc. and then have a beer with a bunch of Cov fans who are just like the people I've been going to games with since Jan 1987 (the Bolton FA Cup 3rd round...I got a good start to my Cov fandom although it would have been good to get to the 4-3 Spurs game the week before).

I got to have a good, if too brief chat with Michael and some of the others and I'm hoping to be more involved as time allows because I like his approach and most importantly – he is getting off his arse and doing things. Rather than worry about numbers, getting loads of attention or creating the perfect protest he's concentrating on keeping & building attention through these smaller, more focussed campaigns and activities.

Chipping away at the people behind this sorry saga, some of whom have no desire to be even seen, let alone engage with us, is a good way of keeping the pressure on whilst the other avenues with the bigger fish (the post-CVA investigation, what's the deal with the mis-registration/the Gary McSheffrey registration letter and so forth) lumber on at a much slower pace.

See you tomorrow Michael :)

No way, it's a 24/7 vocation to serve the needs of their paying customers so there's bound to be someone up there all the time forming new feel-good initiatives.

Keep up the good work and I like the apparent softening of the message, that will get more on board.

Just an idea, but these smaller protests need some kind of "hook" to get people's attention (think people who set up a tea party in the street or all wear their pants on the tube, notable in its own right). Not sure what's appropriate for talk to me? Could you get someone to serenade Joy from street level, or have a giant missing person ad, or get passers by to put a pin on a map where they think Coventry is (or where do Coventry City play). I dunno just saying things off the top of my head.

Good luck tomorrow.

Cheers, shmmeee - I'm thinking about taking a bottle of Byatt's Coventry bitter to deliver as an invitation to have a drink - media like that kind of thing

Any chance you could move a small pub table to the street and have a chair and a pint with a "Reserved for Joy" sign or something? I dunno what the logistics are outside the offices.

I can imagine a table full of Cov fans having a drink in the street would get a few photos.
Edit: maybe non-alcoholic lager as I assume drinking is banned on the streets of London.

Nice idea! I'll see if I can get one of the London guys to bring a folding table or similar
