It's also based on those that came up through the England youth ranks, although he does also have favourites who'll be picked regardless. I reckon if Phillips if half-fit he'll end up putting him in the squad ahead of someone like Ward-Prowse.Basically everyone except Southgate thinks Maddison should be in the squad. As is being said at the moment on Sky Southgate just seems to have his favourites who play for a narrow range of clubs.
Think about some of those who'll be guaranteed places regardless of how they play and think about him being left out despite being in the form of his life. Then think about struggling to break down Iran/USA/Wales while Henderson is being carted out
I think he takes something not dissimilar to the following. Who drops out for Maddison?

I don't see him not taking Henderson because of simple leadership although most would probably agree he's past it so an obvious drop out, although you're leaving yourself further exposed in defensive minded players for attackers.
He's definitely not going to take him.

I'm going to be shouting for a 4231 until we are knocked out.Mings & Henderson shouldn't be anywhere near an England squad & as you say Mount simply has to be in there.
There's a few other changes I'd make to that but it doesn't really matter too much.
Once again it does highlight the lack of balance in the squad/talent pool though;
- Only 3 CBs (+Walker) for a back 3?
- Only Rice & Bellingham as natural CMs?
- Whilst we debate if it's worth squeezing in a 7th attacking midfielder...
