He's a different player now, doesn't have the legs he used to.

Their problems definitely go deeper than him but he's preventing their rebuild by putting up mediocre stats and preventing the development of a modern style of play.

I agree about his age , a modern style of play ? What is that?

High Pressing has been around for a couple decades

It has but he is some way past his prime, you’d have to admit

No I wouldn't build a team around a 37 year old , I just didn't agree he couldn't play the style in question when he thrived in it for years

One of the greatest premier league counters ever involved Ronaldo and Rooney

Undoubtedly, can't believe it's ever been in question, he simply can't play this style of football.

There's a few like that (De Gea & Maguire obvious examples); high profile, decent players in their own way & will possibly put up decent numbers because they're playing the way they want to/are able to but in the long term it's to the detriment of the team.

This is the problem for teams like United, Everton etc. they have no identity/model to recruit & build around so you end up with square pegs in round holes & the downfall is inevitable.

The season before he signed uniteds main issues were defence and midfield, that's where they needed to recruit.
He gets linked with city and suddenly he's their main priority, if was embarrassing from a club of their stature.

It's past tense though.

And yes, still an amazing player all things considered, but stopped Man Utd developing as they were, but they didn't change enough to accommodate him either, so it ended up a mess all round.

It's whatever ten Hag wants to implement, modern might necessarily be the best description but there are very few teams that can survive now without an identity.

That's what Man Utd need to develop and having him there is an active hindrance to that because he's such an outlier to their other players if they play him it affects the rest of their performances. Then when he's away they don't have the experience to perform the game plan.

Enough goal contributions to make them 5th instead of 6th isn't worth them not getting on with the proper rebuild that they desperately need while hindering the development of Rashford and Sancho who should be part of that identity.

As @Liquid Gold said that's a long time ago though. Credit to Ronaldo, he's adapted his game to prolong his career but he can't play that way at an elite level anymore.

He basically can't/won't press at all either.

He has singularly put them back a year or two. It was an idiotic signing and an example of a mess they are in the back office.

Man utd have recruited so poorly for years , before ronaldo it was old zlatan and then old cavani etc

Man utds hierarchy have set them back years , no individual player does that

Also a shame in a way Ronaldo didn't end up at Man City, would have been intriguing how he did there in comparison.

Have to say he'd have probably been a better fit there.

I'm not even blaming Ronaldo though. It's not his fault he's completely the wrong answer and they were prepared to stump up for him.

Them having made that investment in him has put the team development back though.

Would like to see Martial and Rashford back together if they can both perform as they did.

Man Utd were brilliant tonight, not one player below par and fully deserved the win!

Liverpool were absolute shite for 75 mins. Looking forward to Klopp's excuses!

Nunez was a big miss for Liverpool. As good as Firmino was, he’s another that can’t play at the elite level anymore.

Tonight we saw the Rashford of old, he hasn’t played like that for a couple of seasons.

Just seen the still again afterwards. Convinced it was offside! VAR line looked weird as well. Only from one angle too...

Old Zlatan was really good at Man Utd tbf. I'd say it's more the incredibly overpriced tripe they've stumped up for that's fucked them, rather than the odd OAP.

Exactly this.
How do you scout players for United? What's their identity? What's their style of play? They don't have one.
That comes from the top down; then employ a manager to implement it & recruit around it.
At United it just seems like "He's a big name, might be good for the club commercially" completely ignoring how he may fit into a team & as a result they go backwards.

Exactly the same at clubs like Everton, their downfall has been predicted by many in the game for a few years. All so sadly inevitable & unless something changes drastically it will be the same again this season.

9 goals and not one of them scored or assisted by Salah. This is some Space Jam shit.

Need to see it slowed down to be sure but looks a good goal to me.
Palace would have been 3-0 up.

If we all chip in a few quid can we offer Man City £500k for a one game appearance?

Steve Cook tries to claim Harry Kane pushed him, causing him to commit one of the most obvious handballs you’ll ever see

With all the money Forest have spent you wouldn’t think Cook would get into the team now.
