The standard overall in the premier league is shite compared to what it was

You've got some absolute greats such as Salah, De Bruyne etc still going but I am adamant that the actual quality of 'the best league in the world' isn't what it was across the board

The City side of the last 4 years yes

But everyone else, nowhere near the levels of quality we saw from the mid to late 90s through to around 2017 /2018

The amount of overpaid average dross in the top flight now is mental

I’d say it’s nostalgia for a lot of it.

Leicester won the worst quality premier league of all time in 2015/16.

Id say it appears worse as every team plays a system, and we don’t see as many maverick or flashy players

Trying to score the perfect goal, AAATB and the death of wingers has pretty much ruined football as a spectacle. Only Klopp and now Slot at Liverpool have succeeded while also entertaining.

Liverpool are progressively becoming duller and duller.

The Italian league for my money is the best, great quality, goals and good refs.

Not watched much Serie A but I do enjoy the Bundesliga for similar reasons.

The German league is a giggle.

Apparently the 2nd tier is wild.

Some very big names in there for sure. Certainly a league we should look at more closely for signing players

The nostalgia factor is the key - PL players today are miles ahead of their predecessors in technical terms. You can argue about which era of PL football is most entertaining to watch, but the players of today will never stack up to the heroes of your youth, however proficient or talented they may be.

I think it's got a weird statistical quirk that ain't can't recall (also some massive teams).

Also yes, I'm sure there are a few gems in that league.

You would expect that given how much more money is being spent on them. That said, there are plenty of players from the past who would still stand out in the modern game and even more so with the same treatment today's players get. Plenty others who wouldn't get a look in anywhere too.

From my era growing up watching football, the likes of Scholes, Giggs, Beckham, Shearer, Bergkamp, Maldini, OG Ronaldo etc would all be just as successful.

And going back a bit, the Liverpool team of the late 80's. Speaking of, I watched '89 last night which is now available on YouTube. Thought it was really well done and brought back a lot of memories of watching the game as a kid in our Devon holiday caravan! -

Not sure the best PL players today are miles ahead if at all of the best players of the past. The common or garden players maybe are technically better, but they also have the advantage of playing on pitches in August condition all year round.

Indeed. Graeme Souness was a sublime player at his peak as just one example off the top of my head.

I worry that we will not be having the De Bruynes, Rodris ,Salah's sort of players after they move/stop playing! I like yourself watch the Premier league football and see exactly as what you say grossly overpaid players and such poor skill.

Amazing that people would cite the late 90s as a golden era of quality in the Premier League. We were ever-present in the late 90s Premier League and we were largely rubbish.

Have to laugh at West ham .. 3 top 10 finishes in the last 4 years and won a European competition to sack moyes only for moyes to go and turn Everton around and take them above his 2 old clubs West ham and man utd in the league

Think many of us don't realise how good a manager moyes is , including me I'd say
