Gael isn't strong enough to play DM, I would rather have Thomas there.

Gael, wide in the diamond.
With fleck also wide, with baker in his proven CAM.

I think if anything we will play 4,3,1,2.
With bigirimana, Deegan and Thomas/(Kilbane if we sign him) flat across the middle and Fleck behind the Cody and Elliot.
I think we need kilbane or someone similar to ad experience and some more bulk

The second line up would struggle to finish in the top half let alone top 6.

playing him more as a deep lying playmaker ala busquets/carrick , more bout the tempo, passing than tackling.

This is how I'd go at the moment:

-----------------------Murphy-----------------------

Christie-------Keogh-------Wood--------Hussey

--------------Bigi---------Thomas-------------------

Baker-------------------------------------------Sheff

-------------------Fleck-------------------------------

------------------------Cody-------------------------

Got a decent defense, cover for the defense plus links from defense to midfield and from midfield to attack.

Yep mainly because the back 4 in the second line up are pretty inexperienced - willis is a novice an Cameron and Christie are only 40 or so games into their careers, and hussey is still relatively inexperienced. Think they would concede a few and not much height and strength defending set pieces would be a problem.

Like yours but Clarke for Cyrus any day of the week and Deegan in somewhere to give us some bite and leadership (yeah I can get over his stupidity-if I didn't like footballers who were stupid, I'd only ever have gone to watch when Pat Nevin, Kevin Gallacher, Wayne Carlisle or Martin O'Neill were playing!).

The beauty of forums...always come across someone who sees things completely different to yourself. Not takin the piss, genuine question but why clarke over christie?

Personally i see Christie as the prefered option and i wouldnt have deegan anywhere near the team (for footballing reasons only). I think hea dire, absolutely hate it when he starts. Gives the ball away far too much and always seems out of possition to me.

Christie is faster and maybe a better dribbler, Clarke trumps him in all other aspects of the game

Better at defending 1v1 situations, better positioning, better passing, more composure on the ball, better first touch and control of the ball, better shooting and crossing

I too would have Clarke over Christie. He's a much better defender than Christie, especially 1v1 and first and foremost a fullback needs to be able to defend. He's also just as good at going forward as Christie.

It's sooo good to have a football debate!

I used Christie and Bigi/Thomas because I prefer them to Clarke and Deegan. But I think they're great cover and also the other way round (if Clarke and Deegs were starting). I also used Keogh as he's still here, but if he goes then it's either Willis or Cameron unless we get someone else in that's better!

I see Cyrus as a great athlete rather than a great footballer-his positional awareness is the worst in the squad of our defenders, and mentally he switches off. I don't really think he's a full back-he doesn't know where he's meant to be much of the time, and he doesn't exploit the space that the diamond gives the FB in the way that Hussey and Clarke do (and Keogh for that matter). He's fast, he's powerful, he's gutsy and determined, but he's very very raw still.

Clarke has the touch of a guy who's been playing in England representative teams all his life: for 5 years he was considered the best player in the country in his age group at his position, and that technique and touch shines through. His two goals for the club were both sublime and show what ability he has.

He is not a LB, yet was judged as inept as a player by many who saw him playing out of position. He had possibly the most horrific a player can have last Summer, in off the pitch circumstances, and that he was even playing at all last season speaks volumes about his mental courage. That by the end of the season he was one of our best players and major attacking outlets-remember all those Norwood diagonal balls?-is pretty remarkable.

But aside from the sob-story, I just think he's the best prospect in our squad, and I don't have any doubt that he'll play Premiership football. His skill, passing and overall game are superb when he's fit and confident-not that he's ever had much support from our fans, despite loving the club as much as us!!! I think his critics are probably the same people who had to change their tune about Turner, and they'll be doing the same about Clarke very shortly

If we can keep hold of our young players we should have a good side in a few years time. Just hope they are not sold for the first offer than comes in over 500k.

I don't see Cody being able to perform on his own.. Which is a shame as I think the 4-2-3-1 formation would suit our passing approach. To pull it off though you really need a strong striker. A poor mans Drogba, Ruud Van Niestelroy etc. Cody would get battered.

It might work better going 3 at the back and 2 up top in home games, when other teams are going to come here and shut up shop and defend. 3-5-2, with maybe Clarke/Christie on the right, able to drop back to a back 4 if needed... but again sadly we are lacking centre backs for this, especially when we are likely to be losing Keogh.

Home setup

.......................................Murhy

.... Keogh/replacement..... Cameron............ Wood
...........................Deegan........ Bigi

Clarke/Baker........................Fleck..........................Sheff

..................Elliot.................................Cody

Away setup or plan B

.......................................Murhy

Clarke.... Keogh/replacement..... Wood............ Hussey
...................................Deegan/ Bigi

Baker........................Fleck..........................Sheff

..................Elliot.................................Cody

Y'see Si that looks more like 4 or 5 up front in modern parlance, not 2...Napoli and Wigan play with 3 CB's, but the wide-men are wing-backs, attacking full-backs. Like Hussey and Clarke...

Martinez famously transformed a struggling team and a struggling player with his capture of Beausejour last January. Suddenly, he had the player capable of playing that wing-back role properly, whereas the player had struggled in other roles elsewhere. Baker and Sheff are NOT reasonable wide-men with 3 at the back!

Cracking reply mate thanks for taking the time. Like i said it was a genuine question as perhaps ive just not payed him much attention for what ever reason. I always seem to have a player or two that i overlook and just prefer somebody else with nothing solid to back it up with lol

Will certainly give him the benefit of the doubt. I liked christie for his effort last season and the fact he stepped up when needed. Thinking about what you have said you have very valid points about his game.

Still stand by my thoughs on Deegs though, he drives me mad!

I know what you are saying.. It was intended as an all out attack tho. With 2 DM's to Marshall the back line.

I don't think wing backs would work with our players tho.

He drives me mad, too: with the bit between his teeth, he's not only our only ballwinner, but his movement and talking to team-mates are better than any other midfielder we have. Much of my frustration with Christie is his utter blindness to fantastic positions Deegan has taken up!!!

But, when Deegan is poor, he can't pass the ball 5 yards, and he runs like he's been on one of his "all you can eat" binges. So which is the real Gary Deegan? Somewhere between the two I guess. Lets hope he keeps his appetite on the pitch and loses it off it, if he gets a chance after the Spanish Inquisition are done with him...

IMO Kilbane will sign so this is how I see it...

_______________Murphy

Christie___Cameron___Wood___Hussey

__________Kilbane____Thomas

Elliott_________Fleck_______McSheffrey

____________McDonald

The beauty of that formation being that McSheffrey, Fleck and Elliott can all interchange.
