So, we were having a debate at the weekend if you were offered a guaranteed playoff place at the end of the season-would you take it now or take the gamble to stick as we are and hopefully cement a top 2 place?
Couple said playoff-the majority said stay are we are.

We’ll more or less guarantee a top 6 finish this side Xmas at this rate. Sunderland barely won a game after February last season.

The goal now has to be automatics. Imagine the party if we get promoted v Wrexham in April?

Go for the title

As Cov fans, we dare not believe, but its time to put years of disappointment behind us and have the same belief that Doug and Frank have.

We may never have a better chance than this.

Has a side ever taken 28 points from their first 12 games and failed to even make the playoffs? I doubt it.

Looking at the “average” team in the league (somewhere between Ipswich and Swansea) they are getting 1.3 points per game. Even if we regressed back to the mean for the remainder of the season then we’d end up on 73 points which is going to be good for the playoffs most years. We would have to crash massively for us not to make the playoffs from this position.

Gamble all day long

I've experienced a playoff win. Don't need the stress if another 5050 game if it can be avoided

Said at the start of the season finishing 5th Or 6th won’t get us promoted, even if we don’t get autos the way we’re going we should be able to manage what Sunderland did, still think Ipswich come good apart from them cant see anybody else getting close to us,

How much of a gamble is it though? We're clearly the best team in the league and would potentially need only 42 points from our last 34 to make the play-offs from here. That's bottom 8 form over the course of a season.

We have plummeted before after being top around this time of the season. (2015/16)

And it doesn't feel different? A team of teenage loan players in 15/16 v the most settled high functioning squad in the Championship. Then some of the worst signings ever made in January 16 in the history of transfer windows v the high likelihood of recruiting 2/3 players in the Matt Grimes quality bracket. We also had 5 less points at this stage in 15/16.

You think there are any parallels whatsoever?

we would need to be poor to not make the play offs from this position
probably 45 points from 34 games
12 wins 9 draws 13 defeats ie lose more than we would win
That is why the automatics must be now the target

Exactly.
We need to fuck the F.A. cup off as well this year, we dont need any distractions.

but we could be in premier league and Europa league -
win our next 18 league games up to the end of january would put us in touching distance of the title, and then just concentrate on the FA cup

Do sort of agree and that is probably the sensible approach with the squad size, but I really love the FA cup. Always a bit gutted once we're not included in the numbers for the next round draw

When you get a sniff of the pie and are first into the kitchen, do you wait to share it with the rest and guarantee a slice or do you go for the lot even at the risk of getting caught?

No. To progress in the Cup you have to win and winning is the best thing for camarderie and our team are great on that, just look at us at the moment "cloud nine".

Have we not learnt from our previous F.A. cup exploits? Getting to the semis was brilliant, but it has to be a factor in us failing to get to the playoffs.
The extra games means more fatigue, not to mention the extra risk of injuries.
Imo, we stay lazer focused on the task of getting promoted.
We might never have a better chance, and why risk it on a cup we arnt likely to win anyway.

As we are. This is our best shot at autos since relegation from the prem. you don’t give that up. And we all know what a lottery the POs are.

We have a manager who spent most of his career competing at the top end of the table and working for managers who wouldn't accept second place.

The EFL's scheduling of the Hull game so soon after the semi final was a large part of it. That and starting Sheaf and Thomas when they were clearly knackered. If we had to start our strongest team for appearances sake we should have done what Savage has done at FGR this season and subbed them off after a few minutes.

We will never get a better chance at promotion than this season. We need to go full steam on automatics and Doug needs to provide Lampard the means to get what he needs to get over the line in January.

Twist now - top 2 is there, wide open for who wants it.

tbh I’d only take playoffs with guaranteed win at Wembley! (Of course that would be epic, but huge gamble) That Sunderland game killed me last year, as did Luton
