I’ve never understood when people just say “they were bad so it’s hard to judge “It’s almost taking away from our performance

They were bad because we made them look bad , we really were very very good today , not many teams in this league would have dealt with our passing and movement today , a class above Walsall who had no answers .

Great all round performance (no bad performances), could/should have been 4 or 5.

Stand out performers Willis and Baka with special mentions to Kelly and Bayliss.

Some might question bayliss (and focus on one or two sloppy passes) but some of his quality on the ball is head and shoulders above this level.

Bayliss seems to be tracking back a lot more this season and works extra hard when he knows he’s made a mistake.

Every one played well enough today. Hard to pick a MOTM as it could of gone to 3 or 4. I did have to laugh though as good as Stockdale looks/is, his first kick sailed into touch and his next 2straight to Walsall players. Burge would of been crucified for that.

Stockdale 7 composed and organised, commended when needed
Sterling 7 steady
Willis 8.5 MOTM for me.
Hyam 7 reliable
Mason 6.5 quiet but effective in general play
Kelly 8 commanding game
Bayliss 6 poor, still looking for his car keys he lost in the 1st half
Thomas 7 faced some treatment as he was targeted
Enobakhare 6.5 steady but not a great performance
Hiwula 7 confidence finish, deserved a goal
Bakayoko 8 beast of a performance

Nice to see a side solid from the back and assured in each other in a game we deserved to win. Pleased with Stockdale, Kelly and Willis who I felt played one of his best games.
Felt Bayliss was very poor for most parts and walked around for 40 mins in the first half offering little in support or positional play.
It was like he’d lost his keys and was trying to find them instead of being active in the game being played around him. Very bizarre 1st half that seemed to pass him by. Last time I digged him out he scored and had 2 assists the following games so here’s hoping....

A good team performance. Nobody under a 7. I see some gave Stockdale under a 7 but he did everything he could well. That to me is a 7. And although some players might have been slightly better than others I didn't see better than an 8.

A good team display. That was the difference. It is good to watch us play and not worry about the result for once.

Stockdale 7- Done everything expected of him had one moment when he juggled the ball but was in control, really steadied everything at the back
Sterling 6.5- Great cross for the goal but was quite subdued for his standards, don't like how he lets players run behind him and then seems to struggle closing them down
Willis 8- Got caught dallying about with the ball but won his battle with their centre forward easily
Hyam 7- Nothing really got past him and passed the ball out very well from the back, even seemed to be centre midfield at one point
Mason 6- He done ok but for all the forward runs he made in good positions he very rarely crosses the ball, worst player for me but thats not a slating for him
Thomas 6- got kicked about and I think he could really do with a short rest but credit to the lad he battles well and provided the pass for Bright to get the penalty from
Kelly 8.5- Keep him fit because he is everywhere atm bossing the midfield, a couple of stray passes but superb all the same
Bayliss 6.5- Not as dynamic as last season because he is playing a different position but when he carries the ball forward he drifts past players with ease
Hiwula 7- marked him up for the goal, he certainly confuses the opposition as well as himself but drifts in and out too much for me
Bright 6.5- He's a confusing one, he certainly brings something to the team, he carries the ball out well but he is just a very young player so his decisions the same as Bayliss won't always be right
Baka 7- would definitely have marked him more but he seemed to fade after his goal, flitted in and out, won a few decent flick ons and well taken goal

Overall the team was a 9 because we bossed it, these are how I see the game some may disagree but thats football

Subs none really come on and done anything...Chaplin needs a rest

Can't really add more to what has generally been written.

For me the football is far more fluid and entertaining with this team vs. the team that narrowly won 6 on the bounce. We have some exciting players in Bright and Bayliss. Thomas is still a threat but our reliance on Thomas is far less vs. earlier in the season which is a good thing. I'm a big fan of what AB brings to the team. Hiwula looked very short of confidence but it's now back - the fluidity of our football is far more suited to his game. The defence is settled and performing well as a unit. Helped by what Kelly is doing - in top form. In short - good signs for the future.

Totally agree about Sterling, didn't think he had his best game at all and am surprised by some of the high marks.
Great cross for the goal though and hopefully he'll be back on song next week.

I'm still not sure if Mason is any good or not. Certainly going forward he looks like he doesn't know what to do with it half the time.

Thoughts?

Mason is much better defensively whereas McCallum is better going forward.

He doesn't seem to want to get to the byline and whip crosses in like Sterling does, he wants to try and do a couple of shimmys and then pass but it could be a confidence thing too.

I like Mason. I had high hopes for Junior but I always thought his decision making was going to cost us at some point. And it did at times.

Mason seems very solid defensively and is not afraid of being in advanced positions either. Recall also that we have not really been playing with a recognised left winger/midfielder this season which could have left Mason exposed (vs. all the great defensive work that Thomas does on the other side). But he's been solid. A very decent buy and could secure the left back position for quite a few years.

My view is that Sterling hasn't been on top form for quite a few weeks now. Not that he's playing badly in any sense but there was a time when he was one of our main attacking threats. The good news is that the team has evolved over the last 4-6 weeks whereby we have more creativity across the pitch and we are far better retaining possession - taking the pressure off the back 4. So less reliant on Sterling/Thomas to create all of our chances. But he looks solid in defence for sure.

I thought he got beaten to the byline regularly by Jarvis, it was Grimmer-esque, but fortunately his delivery was poor. First time I've seen Sterling get done like that.

I think he is the weak link in our side. No threat going forward. Always stops and passes it back. It's a shame Brown has pi$$ed Robins off as he is clearly a better left back than Mason. Robins should pick the best one for the sake of the team and not hold grudges.

Stockdale 7 Shame it was his last hurrah.
Sterling 7 Great assist for the goal.
Mason 6 Ok, but chooses the safe option when going forward instead of really trying to impose himself on the opposition.
Hyam 7 Assured as usual
Willis 8 Man of the match. Had Cook in his pocket all afternoon.
Kelly 8 Another good captains performance, not far of Willis for man of the match.
Bayliss 7 Made his usual forays forward and tracking back was effective too.
Thomas 7 Got clipped a couple of times but still a reasonable performance.
Bright 7 Like others have said he holds on to the ball for too long and one awful miss but has good feet and scored the penalty.
Hiwula 8 Getting better as the season goes on and a cool finish yesterday. Hope he doesn’t go back into his shell now and go missing again for the next month.
Baka 8 A classic central strikers performance. Bullet header that we haven’t seen for years and good all round front play. Lover the celebration, surprised people weren’t complaining about it like when ex Cov players score against us-remember that they are not allowed to celebrate against us! :emoji_weary:

Robins 8 Can’t really ask for a more complete performance all round and that includes the manager.

Yeah Matt Jarvis was the left winger who used to play for Wolves and West Ham in the Prem. Think he got an England cap or was in the squad at least? Forgot he was at Walsall to be honest.

Overall a great performance I thought. Mason was a bit frustrating in terms of his reluctance to get a cross in (especially as Bakayoko looks like he might win a few headers) but i'd not say he had a poor game. The lads certainly looked fired up, Bright and Thomas particularly (although the yellow card for the former was pretty ridiculous from the ref). I thought Willis did very well and kept fatty Cook well marshalled throughout. Bakayoko won quite a few flick-ons and will hopefully really come on now with a run in the side. Stockdale was a pleasure to watch too, no saves but his all round game were impressive. Hopefully Burge doesn't feel too much pressure coming back in!

Jarvis is on a season long loan from Norwich, so it is possible we could sign him as he is out of contract in the summer.

I would still rather see Brown out of the four of them, Mason is ok but has no confidence to cross it, McCallum looks like what he is an inexperienced kid who should be nowhere near the first team here and I haven’t seen Camwell to comment but I understand he gets stuck in and has a good left foot

If he just doing the day job it should be a 6. That is the average for the team and what outfield players get if they have an average game. To get 7 when no player averages that much during the season as a whole makes no sense. It means the goalie will always be your most highly rated player. Given how much flack he gets, Burge is still numerically one of our highest rated players - because he gets a 7 for doing not very much.

With an average score of 7.3 per player this was our best performance apparently, replacing Barnsley. 3 goals might count

Oh yes Burge. Have seen him be MOM for doing his job because we don't expect him to do his job.

I gave Stockdale a 7 partially because he organises the defence properly. Him shouting at defenders to leave the ball is miles better than a GK that doesn't say a word or that can't be heard.

Being a GK is much more than saving shots and catching the ball. But there are many that don't know the difference and will tell you how much Burge has improved. He might have improved but he still isn't good enough. I have been saying the same thing for a long time. And now we have a good GK playing for us it shows them unsure the difference. It is so obvious.

He gets a lot
Burge has played 27 games and averaged > 7 on 10 occasions he has averaged < 6 only 6 times including 3 in Jan. The average for the team as a whole is 6.1
