Peter Waterman tried to buy CCFC (1 Viewer)

The general consensus amongst Walsall fans is that this is just an example of the BS rumours that get flung around when these sort of things are going on.

On a few of the other things in this threat, Pete wasn't/isn't on the board at Walsall. He did provide a bit of funding which helped bring Merson to the Banks's (bit of a mixed blessing that one!).

Over the years there have been various rumours about him possibly buying Walsall but he has consistently maintained "I have absolutely no desire to own a football club".

Used to see him in the queue for a half time pie regularly including at some Walsall away games but doesn't attend much now. He used to come with his son but when he died in 2005 it pretty much knocked the love for football and attending matches out of him and he mainly concentrates on playing with this train set now apparently.

He may well have agreed to play some role in a bid like "heading it up" or "fronting it" that is being a bit of a figure head with some form of minimal investment as his profile brings with it good publicity and media interest. A bit like another pop producer from Walsall, Steve Jenkins worked with us around ground ownership issues a couple of years ago which brought media attention that would not have otherwise been there.

The headline "Waterman tried to buy Coventry" is most likely a gross exaggeration of his role in any bid though.

Oh yeh.. and. PS: How crap is the Cov Telegraph reporting!

They can't even get our name right. We are Walsall FC pure and simple not Walsall Town FC.

Walsall was formed out of Walsall Town and Walsall Swifts in 1888 so they are only 125 years out of date. Shows how accurate their stories can be! Anyway how's things at Coventry United;)

I met and worked with Waterman a few years back (2002) when he did 'Pete Watermans Christmas Songs of Praise' at the cathedral.

I was one of the singers that got into the choir they set up for it.

He started his life singing in the Cathedral Choir and while he's now lost his singing voice (due to not singing regularly for a very very long time), his knowledge of singing and the industry is fantastic.

He's also a decent guy to be around. Always chatting with everyone, asking how we were doing and if we were enjoying ourselves etc.

Really showed that he cared about the project and that it was close to his heart.

So despite the fact he is a Walsall fan, he would have made a very good owner I think (obviously backed by his chums as well).

Used to like The Hitman and Her.

Always on late Friday nights, seemed to be perpeptually filmed at The Mall in Stockton with pervy cameramen who did close-ups on all the girls in skimpy clothing.

No internet in those days, had to make our own fun.

Funnily enough Richie, my nephew was in that choir and when he went for the audition, when he had finished he said to Waterman "Why don't you buy Cov?"...Waterman couldn't contain his laughter and said something along the lines of "You must be joking! I wouldn't waste any money on that shower of shite!" We have a few mutual friends and some have good things to say about him and others say he's the biggest BS merchant around!

I think that article in 442 says that he would never invest in a football club too!

Hitman & Her...possibly the first of the "drunk people being outrageous" TV genre. Trailblazers. Who was the dancer who the girls always used to squeal like pigs for? Bet he's dead now..

A true staple of ITV's classic late night line up along with Prisoner Cell Block H, The James Whale Radio Show (Jerry Hayes, urghh) and America's Top 10 with Kasey "jumpers" Kasem.

You chant "Who are ya" at other clubs? Wow that's a bit of front!

Yes, bit ironic isn't it considering most people think we're a Polish side. Actually walking round the town now and listening to people talk I'm beginning to wonder myself:D

Must admit I used to watch all those! Well my ex wife used to watch Prisoner so I used to find myself staying up till 4am to watch it with her! 'The Freak' still sends shivers down my spine...but enough about my ex! The best James Whale was when Wayne Hussey was interviewed absolutely slaughtered! TV gold ;-)

He's worth 60 million.. You couldn't get a bus to the shops for that much.

Seriously not enough money!

How much is the mighty Joe Elliot worth? I know he's charged me over the odds in the past when the old mark 3 Escort was playing up but I doubt he'd have £60m.

James Whale used to always have Frank Sidebottom on as well.

The only dream/nightmare I've ever remembered dates from around that time.

I was working in the newsagents I worked at at the time, when the till exploded and bits of metal went through my throat, it was whilst trying to stem the blood flow that I realised that I had Frank Sidebottoms head.

Fuck knows what that means.

It doesn't sound too good to be fair Lord! Whale used to have a lot of his 'mates' on regularly and I think the guy who did Sidebottom was one...miss those days ;-)

Bit of racism to cheer the Enoch fans up.

I don't know though, went into the local Polish shop and they didn't have any Mr Sheen at all.

Reported them to the council for contravening the Trade Descriptions Act.

Had to do the same a couple of weeks ago when I went into the Everything Everywhere shop for some mild and 20 Benson's and they only had bloody mobile phones.

Frank was good. As was the terrifyingly bewildering Charlie Chuck. When going to the loo just before his set at Cov Student Union back in the day, he came in to use them as well. I got his autograph. He didn't say anything. Best thing about James Whale was the weird comedy...the bands were generally absolutely god-awful, though.

Forgot about Charlie Chuck!

Must see if anything on You Tube.

This thread has reminded me of the time that Pete Waterman ran into the back of my car in his Jag in Warwick Row. "Don't do it through the insurance, send me the bill and I will pay" - I'm still waiting tightwad!

Someone else for the "I wonder if he's dead yet?" google. I thought Jerry Hayes was but he resurfaced recently on R5...wasn't he involved in some "unpleasantness" some time ago? No I don't just mean being a Tory MP..

Sounds like perfectly normal behaviour for a CCFC owner!
