When does the free agent window end?

I still refuse to believe we are letting him train here for this long for him to get fit and sign for another Championship club - there is a deal to be done somewhere

I'm not sure of the precise rule but I understood that free agents can sign at any time but can't play until the next window opens. There's a couple of exceptions, if the player is registered prior to signing or there's a short grace period after the window but I think it's only a couple of weeks. There's also the emergency rule but that's mainly for keepers. He'll be training until January even if there is nothing going on...

as I say I'm not sure but I think so. Maybe someone else knows more

Can't sign at all if you've already registered the full 25 players, but we're not in that position.

I think it is something to do with they can be signed and play outside of the window provided they became a free agent prior to the previous window closing.

The signing has to be agreed by the EFL outside of the window. That's the written rule as such but it depends on what conditions they place on that for free agents. It's that detail that I can't find easily and it possibly changes from season to season.

This is what the BBC says about it (for those who still believe anything they say)

Yes. Clubs can sign free agents - players who are not contracted to another club - at any time.
However, unless there is space in a club's registered squad or the player is under the age of 21, new signings must wait until the next registration period before they can play for the club.

With Paterson we waited until the window had closed before signing him. This may have been a coincidence but I suspect it was so that both parties could see if something better came along.
If we are considering Bamford, the same scenario may pan out.

So he could play for us straightaway as we have space in our squad?

Not sure where he'd fit in, he suits SDS FC under Sharky and the style of play he gets his ballers playing, but they have Kazaih Sterling who is really tekky and the top scorer in the league.

Just a couple of weeks after in mid-Feb, he'd been a free agent since the November. I know he was a favourite but once bitten twice shy might apply for King (the great goal aside he didn't contribute very much and he was probably paid very good money.) There's certainly a cut off for all players in March sometime.

I doubt Paterson was anywhere near our top earners?

Didn't think much mileage in it tbh, but he did feature heavily in the unseen, so guess he might be announced soon.

Not for only a few weeks, no. I'm sure that they'll have looked at value aspect of the signing though. The fact that we didn't offer him an extension probably tells the story I suppose.

Apparently Bamford's parents attended Forest v Leeds on Sunday with my youngest sons boss' Mum and it's very much a possibility that he will sign for us.

This is NOT bullshit.

I've heard from my cousin's wife's brother's boss' mother-in-law who attended Leeds women vs Leicester women that he's not signing for anybody.

Still seems a very random signing unless you just really don’t want to play Ellis Simms.

is it a random signing?

A player with a lot of top level championship experience, on a free, in a long difficult season.

If he does well it’s a good addition for depth and experience if we go up too

Yes he could play straight away, but why would we want him? Its not as if we are struggling for goals or having a poor start to the season.

Bamford's best days are well behind him, hes 32 and managed 14 goals in the last 4 seasons. This is a classic case of a players reputation getting better the longer he doesn't play.

Absolutely not what we need. Let's move on.

Most clubs have four strikers in their squad, we only have three don't we.

Makes sense if BTA is going to continue playing wide/behind Haji and we want a 3rd choice striker in case of injury.

Has Bamford got the skill set to play as a 10 himself? He always seemed quite a cultured player to me.

Maybe he's more of an insurance policy in case one of the strikers goes down. He would be cover until the window reopens...

I'd suggest we need cover on the wings far more urgently than we need a 32 year old has been as fourth choice striker.

The whole idea that we should sign him is absolutely rediculous.
