A good bump. Does anyone really think Simms or BTA would take over from Wright as a lone striker and get anywhere near his 75 minutes per goal so far?

BTA has been a revelation so far playing in other positions. He has struck up a good relationship with Wright. His pace and determination has been pulling our opponents apart. Even his defending has been good. If Wright got injured I would still want BTA in his present roles. He has never scored lots of goals. He isn't a lone striker. He needs someone to play with.

So that would leave us with Simms up front. The closer to the goal he is the more he scores. But last season we scored the most headed goals in the top divisions in Europe. Wright was out injured or was struggling for most of the season. Even then Simms wasn't scoring enough and you would think he had the perfect build for it. He also isn't going to run past players like a lone striker needs to be able to.

He looked like he did just that against Cashin last weekend

BTA is rubbish isn't he

I wish we could all learn that players come in and out of form at this level, it's so hard for anyone not getting regular game time to show what they can do.

Different players have different strengths. If you don't play to their strengths you won't get the best out of them.

Lampard has been great for us for putting round pegs in round holes. It's quite simple. BTA isn't a lone striker. Wright would look poor if given the job that BTA has done so far this season. But the pair of them together doing the roles they have? They complement each other. BTA pulls the defences apart leaving space for Wright. When BTA releases the ball they try to get back into shape. BTA is then given space to find a good position to score. Very similar to the way Torp has been playing.

I think we could score alot more goals if we had a player who could fire a long throw in. Milan needs extra training.

Look let's just agree to disagree. This is just constantly going around in circles.

You think Simms and BTA are good enough. Most of us think differently. When questioned on positions needed to strengthen Lampard wouldn't say if we were after a striker.

We will see what happens between now and September 1st.

BTA has been exceptional; it was obvious he was nowhere near as bad as was being made out at times. He is easily one of my favourite players.

Just to be clear how to read this graph:

The further along the line just mean they’re getting more chances. How far above or below the line is whether they’re over or underperforming on those chances. Wright and Asante are far along the line because as a team we create a huge amount of chances. They are just above it but not by much implying they are taking those chances.

Kone for example is scoring far more than he’s getting and in our team would outscore either Wright or BTA based on this data.

I was looking at that and thinking "why is everyone getting that excited? Surely the best thing to be is way above the line? Being to the right hand side of the graph is good in that it means you're getting loads of chances but it's still better to be way above the line.

When we were linked to Kone I watched a few clips and thought his general play looked really classy, and that he could be a bargain at the apparent price. I'm sure the recruitment team works off a bit more than a few minutes of YouTube though!

It's still quite a small sample for Kone - he's only played 582 minutes so his data is a bit distorted. He scored a cracker at Wrexham and massively overperformed his xG that day, similar at Bristol C. Balanced off against some other games where he has neither scored nor been particularly involved.

I was sceptical about Kone. Thought he lacked pedigree. Others were convinced of his potential. He’s had a good start if he carries it on, he’ll likely be off again in the summer

It's unlikely a player can consistently continue to exceed his xG, as stated the sample is too small to be meaningful at the moment.

A poster on here compared Morgan Whittaker to Haji recently saying they were similarly valued. I guess that assessment was based on one good season for Whittaker.
Look where he is on the graph above, not sure how many minutes he has played this season but he is not massively underperforming his xG even though he hasn't scored.

Yeah I mean xG over what? 9 games? Is a tiny sample anyway. The entire point of these kind of aggregate stats should be to look at long periods or large groups, not individuals over short periods. See also school pupil target data.

Getting lots of chances and scoring them at the expected rate is much more sustainable than only getting a few but converting them all.

Even top strikers rarely outscore their xg by much in the long term.

Fair point. I think you'd need at least two or three seasons of a reasonable sample size of a player outperforming xG to say they're better goalscorers than other strikers.

Data from here: https://footystats.org/players/england/ellis-simms

(The AI has fucked the existing points as it guessed them from the image, but he is right and so is the rough scale)

Yeah I mean once you’re in there you’ve kind of committed. That’s just rude.

I stick with what I said. I wouldn't want either as a long term replacement for Wright. BTA has been great in his new roles. Simms has been good at getting on the end of a ball. But neither have the composure Wright has in front of goal.

I see the normal snipers are out. So which out of Simms and BTA would take over the role of Wright if he gets another bad injury?

And if he hadn't been there, EMC would have put it in.
Can't remember the last time we have so many players on the line putting the ball in.
