Has been not having to rely on loans so much.

Previous years the loans we have brought in have been amongst our very best players, if not the best and they have really strengthened us, so it's great that this year, even though we have had loans, we haven't really relied upon them at all too much.

Maguire-Drew and Barrett have only played bit parts and Nazon of course was gone in Jan.

Really proud to look at our best players this season and see that they are our own (McNulty, Doyle, Kelly, Davies, Grimmer, Shipley etc.)

Great feeling and no real gaps to fill with the departing loans now.

Agreed. Nazon has been the only real key loan for us this season. Yeah his temperament was questionable but he scored some key goals in the early part of the season.

Agree with the sentiment of your post though. Very freshening to not rely on them like previous years.

I wonder if this has also helped with squad cohesion? Having said that ‘the duck’ seemed to be well liked. I’d have him back but as you say would prefer him to be a permemant signing.
Getting young loan players in who have proved to be no better/worse than our own youngsters was a bit disappointing.
It seems to me that the loan policy should be like the signing of trialists, that we should only get them in if there is a gap in the squad we need to fill quickly or if they are significantly better than players we already have.
Barrett and Maguire-drew added nothing. I suppose JCH is technically a loanee too but it sounds like he’s more of a signing.

Yes great point Otis! Under the old policy with all the loans going 'home', we'd now be wondering what team we had for league 1...and where the money was coming from to rebuild.

Loans were crucial to the brief success under Mowbray. Armstrong and Murphy were both loans. Just look how people are coveting the goalkeeper Henderson at Shrewsbury and admire the impact he made.They can add genuine quality and be the difference between mid-table and the play-offs. And if they do not work they are the easiest to be rid of. In L1. We will need a couple.

It helps if the manager has good contacts, as Mowbray probably did. I am not sure Robins does.

Don't see why - it gives career opportunities for young players in a very crowded market place. Armstrong now has a good career at the right level. Murphy is in the Prem but was first spotted playing with us and Colchester. It is better than playing in a reserve team even if they had one. Young players need competitive game time. L2 is probably too low for Prem managers to consider loaning. L1 is better.

I'd take a young quick loanee striker any time over the likes of Stockley who is being talked about elsewhere.

Another good thing about the lack of loans is the blokes who sit behind me don’t spend the whole match trying to work out who the players are , where they are from , how long the loan is every week!!

I agree completely with this, and is why it has been so hard for us to retain players like Maddison & Thomas that we might previously have kept for a little bit longer. Prem clubs & even Championship clubs sign players they have no intention of putting in their team, but who they still own should the odd one turn out to be the real deal, but in the process they take out a potential player from a rival. Chelsea & Man City particularly loan out a ridiculous amount of players every season. I'm probably ok with season long loans (with no recall option) but otherwise I'd be quite happy for the system to be scrapped.
