I thought it was because we had more inexperienced under 20's playing than any other team in the division - 50% more than the next closest - and they started to learn from their mistakes.

That and the fact the squad was shorn of players, and some meagre reinforcement arrived in January.

I consider the above more probable than your assertion that Thorn got a coaching DVD for Christmas

I also think this season he has a strong back room staff and in terms of wages, squad etc. we are one of the strongest now in the league far more so than some people want to acknowledge (not you). This concludes he may well get the club back to where it should never have left anyway hence the serendipity tag.
Personally I believe he lacks sufficient intellect to ever be a manager of people and to react to adverse situations when they come along.
Not hatred just an impassioned view he is not up to it. No one hates a manager and I would think no one loves them either. They are vessels to achieve a purpose and as soon as they prove incapable you get rid.

You blame the tactics for the first half but not the second? and yet the tactics the team played too were very similar throughout the entire season, the only difference was Thorn was able to bring in Nimely and Norwood on loan.
I dont understand how you can say we should never of left the championship? clearly we were not good enough over the course of an entire season whether that is because the club has not had adequate investment in a number of years and in addition we were unlucky with some injuries I honestly dont believe that any manager would have been able to keep us up, can an artist create a masterpiece without any paintbrushes? no. So why should a football manager be expected to achieve promotion with shit players.
Also Your intellect comment. Firstly it is ironic that you comment on someone else's intellect when you yourself cant seem to grasp the bigger picture, anyway I digress. Secondly, do you have any basis for your attack on his intelligence? the fact he doesn't waffle and respond quickly in interviews? perhaps he actually thinks before opening his mouth. Something I advise you do more.

Saying that you will want Thorn gone even if we get promoted as champions of League 1 (hypothetically) strikes me as a bit of a shame. It indicates such a determination to stick to your viewpoints and not be proved wrong, that you can't see the wood for the trees. The use of the word 'hatred' stems from this stance, but is used as a useful term of reference only so don't get hung up on semantics. I hope Thorn does well, but I want us to be right up there challenging for promotion. If we are not, on the evidence of the season, my opinion on Thorn will be updated, game by game. If you could edge towards a similar balance, people would suspect you had Coventry's interests at heart more so than self preservation on a forum, which is precisely how your previous statement reads. If we go up as League 1 winners, we have had a more exciting season than I have seen. I will be more than likely pleased with Thorn and pleased with the players. If we have another season of mid-table mediocrity or, heaven forbid, yet another relegation scrap, I will more than likely be displeased with Thorn and the players. Not rocket science, say what you see. And it is the pre season, so no one has seen much yet.

Self preservation? What's the difference between saying relegation was beyond his influence as he had the weakest squad as saying he should take any credit if we get promoted with a strong squad.

There is no difference it would just be back to where we were and we would be down again with his continued employment.

I'll stay self preserved thanks.

Yes, I am one of the multitudes who say relegation was unequivocally outside of Thorn's sphere of influence and the manager of a football team has nothing whatsoever to do with the outcome of their season. Oh no, that's bollocks.

Question. If we won the league 1 title would you keep the exact same squad or would you want improvements?

Improvements. Good league 1 players may make poor championship ones.

Yes I was hoping one of the others might answer that. I guess though if you replaced those that weren't up to the championship you would obviously HATE them

It always strikes me as strange that those who questions Thorn's ability as a football manager are accused of hating him?!

It is my opinion that Thorn is going to hold us back this season, we need to get promoted this time, we haven't got time to piss around with him. He is way out of his depth and will be gone by Christmas, in my opinion. I just hope it isn't too late by then.

Surely it's simple. The first team squad is funded within the bottom couple of clubs in the league, and that's where we ended up. Thorn simply served up a result proportionate with investment levels. It's not like he significantly underperformanced, like Cotterill at Forest for example; he just had crap and served up a crap result.

Many think the blame therefore being laid largely at his door is a bit short-sighted, and therefore wonder if the's a deep-seated issue beyond simply the footballing result. Maybe some don't like the man? Certainly some of the adjectives used in conjunction with his name; fat, clueless, bald, someone even called him a pedophile when he signed Nimely as they claimed he had a propensity for younger players (in ignorance of the fact that's all we could afford) seems to indicate a tissue of irrationality amongst some.

This year will be the test. When all's finished and we understand the strength of our squad against our peers, we can then measure his performance and make a valid judgement; without prejudice

Not the most measured of criticism I've read on here. Just goes to show though, what people think passes under the auspices of 'humour'; or simply refer back to out of frustration

Yeah because I am sure that he scouted everyone in the first team and recommended everyone in the first team and that no manager bought in his favored players or had opinions on who was signed. That is as short sighted a comment as your intellect one.

People seem to think that any player with a bit of quality was scouted by Thorn though?

I never said that he didnt scout some of them did I? I am sure he has scouted some flops, as have many people e.g. Even Alex Ferguson with the £25million spent on Anderson and the reported £9million for Bebe.
But I am sure he also scouted Nimely, Norwood and Keogh plus others considered our better players.

Given he arrived in the 2006/07 season, and since then we've scouted Dann, Fox, Westwood, Jutkiewitz and Keogh - all of whom we greeted by resounding choruses of 'who?'; I reckon it's churlish to cast doubt upon his credibility as a scout

2006/2007?! He arrived when Coleman was in charge, he came in after Dowie had gone. Bob Dowie was scout before him, I think?

Thorn was at Ipswich, Everton and then was working with Coleman at Fulham. He wasn't here when we signed Dann or Fox.

According to Uncle Ray (my hero), Dowie had nothing to do with the Dann and Fox signings. Ranson said his 'people' had been tracking the pair - possibly Thorn as he arrived on the scene on Dowie's departure?

Not meaning to sound condescending there, that's just a guess. If anyone has conclusive evidence on who scouted them that'd be good.
