Has he? Oh, right, thanks.

Was just trying to make the point re a second striker. Been talk on here that a player wouldn't come in to sit on the bench behind Armstrong, but I just think with the combination of loss of form, injury, suspension, international call-ups and the potential to field two strikers together at times, then any new striker coming in would indeed get enough game time here for sure.

I know what you're saying, be interesting who we can bring In.

Looks like we could be missing Armstrong for 2 games at Easter, Peterborough away and Colchester at home.

England U19's have 2 European qualifying matches and you would assume he will be called up, so it's not just about taking pressure off Armstrong, but as has been said, cover for suspension, injury and now with this of course, international call-ups.

I would say it's paramount we get that striker in quick if we can. Also there isn't another option of Arma isn't firing on all cylinders. Dominic Samuel would have been the perfect fit. I'm sure Mogga has a decent target in mind. Mogga can sense automatics here.

I agree, been saying a for a few months we need another striker and fortune and tudguy aren't good enough cover.

I do think the fact we play only play 1 up front and that Armstrong is an automatic starter will have some impact on the caliber of striker we bring in. For example everyone's banging on about Samuel but IMO reading won't him moving from a top 2 side playin and scoring week in week out, to coming and sitting on our bench or being rotated for example. Likewise Newcastle are happy with Armstrongs development because he plays 90 mins week in week out, they won't be happy if he starts getting rotated.

Yes you could go and change the formation and go 2 up top, but I just can't see Mowbray moving especially as moving to two - 442,352, 41212, etc, etc will make it difficult to fit in the likes of Murphy, Cole and Maddison into a starting line up.

I think someone like that Smith from Swindon is a more likely target than Samuel.

But we do desperately need someone to come in and provide quality back up to Armstrong.

This pretty much echoes my thoughts on the requirement of another handy forward, one who can score goals, link up well and play off Arma/replace Arma if need be.

Smith would fit TM's bill, absolutely.

I do think we will go two up top, but not as a starting position and only to try and change or force a game.

Ideally it would be good to find a striker who is also adept at playing wide. I know on occasion Armstrong has played wider, though not necessarily wide left.

Yep agreed. sorry Otis I should have made that more clear in my post, I meant start with 2 up front so agree with your first point!

Personally, I think we have enough players who can play wide, I'd like a big man who's the get in the box and end of a cross sort of player to give us some variety. One of our issues is we don't get enough players in the box when the balls out wide.

Totally agree. Have seen the ball out wide and immediately switched my focus to the box and more often than not it's just Armstrong there, with one or two players approaching from just outside the penalty area.

Did notice twice on Tuesday that Walsall had their fullbacks inside, or just outside the penalty area. One occasion in particular, their right back made a tremendous run into space awaiting a through ball which would have probably given him a direct run on goal.

We need more bodies going forwards, but I am guessing TM is worried about us being caught on the break.

This is why Armstrong struggles in some games. It is not that he isn't playing well it is just he gets isolated and we don't get players in the box to support him. I sometimes think we need the option of two up top, just to make teams 're think their tactics.

I like 4231 for the solid base it gives us and the freedom it allows the younger front line to have. But I do think we need an option to mix it up in games. We also need some height for when teams close us down at the back and we have to play it long.

Yep, I think some judgement upon Armstrong is very harsh. Sometimes we get people saying he didn't have a good game at all, yet he has simply been isolated and no-one has been able to give him the ball in dangerous positions.

Sometimes he gets little or no support and this is why I think JOB is important and Maddison and Cole too.

You need to support when you have one solitary striker.

If you boil our games down when do we score from crosses from open play ? We have wide players who often get past full backs to the bye-line but nothing comes of it, come to think of it apart from corners or free kicks have we scored many headers, can't remember the last time. We need a centre forward to partner AA, play with 2 wide players so for me that's 4-4-2 or 4-3-3

Only headers really are by defenders from corners.

Yep, there's no issue playing a lone striker but you need 2-3 of your midfielders making runs in behind and making late runs into the box. Murphy does it occasionally but the only other player really has been Vincelot when Mowbrays given him the licence to when we've been chasing the game - Job, Maddison, Cole and Lamieres do their best work deeper in front of the back 4, as does Murphy to an extent.

And in Murphy's case, coming inside from wide positions.

Geez, you're easily pleased! With me it usually needs a Tim Vine pun or Eddie Izzard talking about being covered in bees and the Death Star canteen!

Not necessarily, Nottingham Forest used to play with two wingers who would get to the bye-line, but rarely would they stand the ball up for headers. They often passed the ball back towards the penalty spot for the forwards and the midfielders running into the box.

I don't think 442 would be employed other than plan B in a game.

Depends on what players you have and what tactics you want to adopt I suppose.

We're mainly talking about a plan B. And also, you can't stand still, got to keep looking for continuous improvement. We hammered Crewe but apart from that game, we've struggled to score more than 1 a game since the Gillingham game.

In fact you look at the form table over the last 6, we're currently 11th but we've scored 9 in 6, 5 of which came in the Crewe game, which means we scored just 4 in those other 5 games. We're bit moaning or being negative just discussing how we can take some pressure off Armstrong and score a few more goals. I wouldn't change the system, just think we should commit 1 or 2 extra bodies in the box when we have it out wide.

correct the system has worked well most of the time. It just needs a couple of tweaks and a plan B for the odd day it doesn't. I have never understood this fixation with 442 some of our fans have.

Problem is getting a reserve striker on loan is unlikely. So we'd have to spend cash.

Wasn't that a near post header on Tuesday night that led to Stokes goal?

Interesting that Nathan Oduwa has returned to Tottenham after his loan spell at Rangers.

TM was dissapointed he couldn't get him on loan in the summer.

Possible Kent replacement on the wing?

Might be worth a short term deal till the end of the season?

Striker Shola Ameobi will leave Championship strugglers Bolton because the club cannot offer him a new deal in their current financial situation.

The 34-year-old joined on a short-term deal in October and scored once, on his debut against Leeds, in eight outings.

Former Newcastle man Ameobi spent time at Turkish side Gaziantep BB and Crystal Palace before he joined Bolton.
