While the internet has done so much good, it also allows people of influence to reach impressionable people wherever they are with hate-filled propaganda. That senator will have people all over agreeing with his 'it's bad innocent people were killed. However...' shit.

They didn't. If you read further on he received 19 votes but got the seat when the representative was disqualified. Assume their system is next in line rather than a revote.

The main perpatrator from the videos who was a member on 8chan, a site set up because they thought 4chan was too suppressive that is so filled with stuff like this that Google doesn't list it. I defy anyone to have a look through 4chan and then picture the kind of person that thinks they need somewhere less tame.

It is indeed a tricky one. However my view is that if I overheard my son talking any right wing extremist shit and he seemed to find it glamorous. I'd sit him down and force him to watch a video of the reality of such ideology. That and kick his arse up and down the road obviously

I know you are largely talking in figure of speech, & in the moment...but relate the sentiment rather than the words - educate is good, kicking arse is a bit extreme in itself?

Breitbart straight in with comments from their „Second amendment“ looser gun control journalist. One man shot back, so their take is to justify more guns.

The world is now more unstable than it's ever been. Are we that shocked at this latest massacre ? I'm shocked at my own attitude to be honest, years ago I'd be reading about it in amazement, but today I'm thinking " here we go again."
Terrorists trying to outdo each other by committing more atrocities. Islamic terrorists will now seek vengeance for this and on and on it will proceed.

The 'ratchet effect' they call it BBR. Would hope this would be a watershed moment and a slice of the populace would disavow the hateful spewings of Tommy Twonames, Hopkins et al but the early signs aren't good. Already expressed my disgust with some lowlife on Fb who registers a laughing emoji at the news. A woman would you believe too....

The thing is, the cowards take it out on innocent people on either side.

Why not just put the extremists from both sides in a room and let them slog it out? Do everybody a favour.

Thing is Nick they dont see themselves as cowards, they see themselves as martyrs and heroes. The human brain is a complex structure, but feed it rubbish and this is what you get.

It is because people believe it and buy into it and treat them like it.

A bloke running into a packed place with a gun is a coward, same blowing themselves up at a concert full of kids.

If they want a war, let them have a war between the extremists.

New Zealand police asked people not to view or share materials by the attacker, so The Sun published gifs from the video and the Daily Mail linked to his manifesto.

I sometimes wish people had spent time in Northern Ireland during the troubles and then experienced Northern Ireland again post piece process like I did growing up and into adulthood. I would think that the majority of those who subscribe to politics of fear and hate and consider the likes of Tommy Robinson and Katie Hopkins to have a legitimate voice would probably feel the need to rethink their lives if they had.

I know from personal experience that hatred, especially blind hatred leads only to more hatred. Events like today will only stop when people turn their backs on fear and hate and follow hope and understanding. That’s a personal responsibility not a collective.

Only surprise is that nothing on this scale has happened in Europe. Yet.[/QUOTE]

Did you miss the Bataclan, Westminster, Charlie Hebdo, Madrid train, Manchester, London Bridge etc., etc., and assorted truck attacks?

This is also a fairly regular occurrence in North Pakistan, Nigeria, other Sahel and in particular Shia areas, but not a peep on here

What annoys me is when these people don't get labelled as terrorists, same as the guy who killed Jo Cox.

I don't think that is true. We are not about to enter WWIII. I think it is more about ease of travel and communication and it seems quite easy to source automatic weapons.

Most of these terrible incidents are fairly local, there have always been unstable parts of the world, right now the Middle East is a mess, in the 90's Yugoslavia fell apart, in the 70's Pol Pot committed genocide, then there is Mao, Rwanda, etc.etc.

Well yeah, but calling them a "shooter" or something takes away the political aspect.

To say the world is not at it's most unstable in my opinion is naive. There's trouble everywhere wars going on etc.False religion and politics dictate the world order, and not in a good way it seems. And with Trump and Putin leaders of the 2 leading nations, is it any wonder the majority of us are anxious !

It’s when they say that they’re mentally ill to excuse it as if it’s a condition that’s exclusive to white people. Anyone who is of a mental state where they allow themselves to be radicalised to the point that they blow themselves up taking others with them, drive a van into a crowd exiting a mosque, hack to death an unarmed soldier in the street, shoot an unarmed politician while canvassing or indeed carry out the atrocities we’ve seen today is mentally ill to some degree. The people who radicalise them aren’t seeking out and influencing people of sound mind to do these things because the simple truth is people of sound mind don’t do these things.

I think the New Zealand PM was calling it a terrorist act straight away, might have been someone else but it was a prominent figure at least.

Tragic event and feel sorry for the victims but there was going to be a backlash eventually and I'm sure this won't be the last.
However, it was not a terrorsist act and he was not a terrorist.
He was a deranged person who had access to a powerful weapon.

The man released a manifesto about white genocide and immigration, he's basically the dictionary definition of a terrorist.
