This yearly garbage continues to throw up more medals and honours than Idi Amin gave himself! It's becoming an absolute joke! Bradley Wiggins FFS! Why? He rode a pushbike on a jolly around France and won a bleedin' jersey! Cherie Blair? Do me a favour!
What about all the people who really deserve an award. The dedicated nurses and doctors on a cancer ward, the lads in Afghanistan risking life an limb every day, the people who go out of their way to work unpaid for a charity eg, Shelter.
Bradley bloody Wiggins a "Sir"? Bloody joke!

I agree it should be people who have saved lives, charity workers, people who really make a difference.

Why the fuck do we knighthoods? I swear we don't live in a feudalist society!

There are hundreds of people who get recognised for the great charity work that you describe, but we dont hear about them because they are not newsworthy since we have no idea who they are. A sprinkling of celebrities has always been the norm and looks unlikely to change and I think there are much more important things to get wound up about.

These are not awards. They are recognition of achievement.
Yes charity gets a big sway in this and many of the celebrities and sports people mentioned do tremendous amounts of charity work which goes towards there 'qualification' if you will.

Before criticising such recognition find out what these people have done besides what you know about.

Having said that I do accept that some are seemingly ahead of others and some receive less recognition than deserved and vise versa.

For military personel they do have their own recognition service...its called medals.

Its not a perfect system by any means but one which we should cherish.

as for Wiggo, it might be a bit early in his career (and maybe a bit caught up in the olympics hype) but he is a fantastic athelte, to win gold in the olympics and the TDF in the same year is an amazing achievement. I am a keen cycling and seeing what he can do on his bike is amazing, that takes massive amount of hour training to achieve that goal.

I suspect opinons on this subject are them very selves objective due to age, education and having the full information to hand. Oh well.
