New or existing players (1 Viewer)

Morning guys and girls,

I was thinking this morning about the players that have left us so far this summer, the players that will be out of contract next season and various things, and it got me thinking. Say, with the wages we are saving from Marlon King, Kieren Westwood, Stephen O'Halloran, Lee Carsley, Isaac Osbourne, Aron Gunnarsson (Possibly) and Michael McIndoe, I would estimate around 35k per week, would we rather see the club use this money to tie down our important players to better, long-term deals and then use the rest for future transfers, or use the saved wages to bring in new players and then sort the existing players contracts later on, risking another situation like that of Westwood and King?

If I remember correctly, Sammy Clingan, James McPake, Freddy Eastwood, Chris Hussey, Martin Cranie, Carl Baker, Gary McSheffrey, Clive Platt and Danny Ireland all have only 1 year left on their contracts. Personally, I think the board need to be pro-active and sit down with Clingan, McPake, Hussey, Cranie and McSheffrey and get them signed up for a few more years. Baker and Eastwood should be given the season to prove they deserve another deal and Platt and Ireland should be let go next summer.

So personally, we cannot afford to let these players run their contracts down and go for free, so I would much rather us to get our existing players sorted first and then use the remaining wage budget on bringing in new players to complement the ones we currently have.

Thoughts?

Depends on how much ambition the club has. If we want to be serious contenders for promotion we are going to need to invest in the current sqaud players then on future transfer targets, which we know wont happen. Best option for the club with the state it's in, would be to cash in on them all if it gave us enough money to replace them then leaves some left over to service the debt. We can't afford to let players leave for free which i'm sure we can all understand the reasons behind.

Maybe they wont want to sign new contracts yet, look at Westy, he waited to see were we finished up , I think if that run under Hoofriyd had continued and we had made it to the playoffs he woud have, my gut feeling is the names will wait and see were we are mid season, in the mean time we still need to be looking for new talent, pref younger players who will maybe develop some loyalty and play for the club not just the paymaster.

Mixed feelings really.

I guess that those who perform have earnt the chance for an improved deal, but they were clearly happy with the terms when they signed. However, the modern way seems that you are expected to give more money mid-way through the risk that you took if you want to keep them and yet of course you can't slash those who don't cut it.

This is why I have no problem if we sign players on a free with shorter term deal and run the risk of losing the good ones as we can't afford to carry the dead weight in the squad. A few new faces is always nice to freshen things up and we all like a signing, but the rewards should be for loyalty and in particular to harness those who come through the ranks and make it because they share more of an identity with the club and the area.

For the first time in a long time I actually feel depressed about CCFC, I have tried for months to keep positive and have faith in Andy Thorn but since Marlon left I was hoping we would sign Phillips as I think although he is old he will do the job for us for one season but I doubt he will come here and I doubt we can afford him.

I am not surprised Westy has gone and I say good luck to him, but then with the rumours about 3 clubs wanting Jukebox and even Gunnar draggin his heels over signing a new deal - I am starting to feel nervous of next season.

Sorry to be boring and miserable but it is how I feel today :(
