The worst part about this forum is the impression you get that people get a kick out of Burge making a mistake or being able to berate him. Before Stockdale came in, he was having a fine season and has been out of form since coming back in. He had a superb game last night I hasten to add. The lack of support for him from his own fans has been shocking but then again it's the same fans who would cheer to get Stern John sent off. I don't pay much attention to other clubs but I hope these kind of incidents occur elsewhere otherwise it make me despair that we would turn on our own players.

Then again, this is the same group of fans who turned on Westwood at the end claiming he wasn't that good anyway, the same group of fans who berated Joe Murphy as well. Maybe we all just need to point fingers at the goalkeeper because when they make a mistake the consequences are bigger than a central midfielder (who gets legendary status) constantly kicking the ball out for a throw in. Who knows?

Disagree with your first point, I'm not a fan of the likes functionality on this forum regardless and would be happy to see it removed.

I also can't help but feel slagging off Burge and throwing a few cheap shots his way would actually garner more likes on this place judging by the vitriol shown over the last week prior to the Fleetwood game, if that was my angle.

I take some of what I said back. Burge used the abuse to pull out s much better performance. Still don’t condone it but he changed his game from minute 1 and showed he can command his box much better than he has of law. Still rooted to his line from Most corners.

Super display last night grendel?

Wouldn't go as far as a super display but he did what he had to do quite well which is all we ask of him

Mentally weak then isn’t he? “He used the abuse to pull out a much better performance?”-in reality shouldn’t he be doing that all of the time not just when he is trying to prove a point?

Don’t think Burge had been particularly bad, but to say he was having a fine season pre-Stockdale is wide of the mark. He’d been really out of sorts for a good few weeks prior. I do agree that some fans are glad to see the mistakes creeping back in and have an “I told you so” attitude, but it’s counterbalanced by going overboard and saying he had a superb game on Tuesday. We as fans have an inability to just park the opinions somewhere in the middle and say “he’s been a bit hit and miss, he’s ok but we may be able to do better for the money a new contract would cost”. It’s either superb or dogshit.

Just been watching Tuesday's highlights. Burge saved us again and again and again. MOTM easily.

I think the anger at the way we lost to Burton found an easy outlet in critcising Burge and it all became rather unseemly.

All the same, he is erratic, that cannot be denied.

New keeper? Not sure myself.

Every time Burge makes a save, everyone says "see how good he really is". But a goal-keeper is supposed to make saves.
With a goal-keeper it's natural (and correct) to focus on their mistakes, because the best goal-keepers are the ones who make the fewest mistakes.
But above all, a solid goal-keeper inspires confidence in the defense in front of him. I doubt whether Burge could ever do that.
