I seem to recall Doug stating some time ago that if we do make it to the Premier League (today woo hoo) then he will give it a good go and would be looking a some new investment into the club. Has anyone heard anything more about if anyone has been lined up?

Apparently Tesla is Aquiring the Battery Facility up Bagington Gateway and City and the CBS are being thrown in to sweeten the deal...

A football media mate of mine who never has anything interesting to tell me about Cov, has suggested the reason we have been taking time with transfers relates to bringing in new investment.

I’m not sure how reliable he is because frankly he has said some things before that were nonsense 😅

But be rude not to share. Anyone else heard any murmurs?

Could be nonsense, or unrelated, but

Doug said on the Football Boardroom podcast that he would only bring in another partner if they could bring value beyond money in terms of their contribution to growing the club.

He’s not interested in diluting his ability to make decisions quickly unless he can see where the trade off makes sense for the club.

It's risky. That's how Richardson lost control leading eventually to the club going bust.

Since the change of financial rules in the Prem you can only spend 85% of your revenues on player signings and wages. There's also a rolling 30% extra that doesn't reset in case of emergencies.

This means that you can bring in as much investment as you like, but if you use it and go over your limit you get a minimum 6 points deduction.

It's actually a good leveller for us if we can establish ourselves isn't it. Our revenue is only going to improve with Doug plus owning the ground. Another reason why I think we'd look to extend the stadium somehow if we stayed up for a couple of years

I listened to this as well. I'd consider it the best barometer as it is straight from the source.
King has overseen a 'level-up' and I think he will try totake us to the next level on the present model.
If we established ourselves for 2/3 seasons in PL, he might look outside if he felt he needed help.
I don't see outside investment as imminent.

It's only a leveller with the clubs with a similar revenue.

Spurs for instance will have a revenue of between 600m and 700m approx. At the lower level they would have over 500m to spend on transfers and wages. They spend a massive amount most seasons on transfers yet are constantly well below the limit.

Richardson was a bit of a crook and it wasn’t just the football club the guy ruined
Richardson would have bought back Highfield Road before letting us end up under the council boot. McGinnity enacted a coup to stop it so he could get the money from the stadium for his seating company.

McGinnity tried to steer the ship which was heavily taking on water and sinking from the damaged Richardson did. He ran up the huge debts and promised a stadium that was a thing of make believe with retractable roof and pitches (I’ve got the original magazine they published all about the new stadium being built) then overpaid for the land without taking into account the clean up work etc. It was a huge mess Joe Elliott and McGinnity tried to save the club but it was too late. Sadly SISU came in and we all know the rest.

Still would love to know where most of the Robbie Keane money went...
Didn't it go back to the original investors? I seem to remember at the time Richardson was trying to trade players like horses where you had a consortium of investors who would stump up the fee to buy but would be able to take all the profits when sold.

It's a long time ago so might be misremembering!

Are you as keen to find out where the money to buy Robbie Keane came from?

It was a widely cited “Newmarket scheme” (no longer permissible I believe) where the investors more or less owned the players and were entitled to a share of profits. I’m no fan of Geoffrey Robinson but without his investment we never would have signed Keane in the first place (we had just sold Huckerny to Leeds against his wishes due to severe financial pressure).

Not sure the investors got all the profits, but you’re broadly correct.

Think they referred to it as the “Newmarket scheme”.

I was recently listening to Joe Elliot on the Sky Blue History podcast.

He reckoned Robinson lost about £20m when SISU came in.

probably. A lot of the debt in SBSL was the old debts that remained after the purchase

Was an interesting interview. Would have liked to see Elliot pushed a little harder on some of the stuff that happened but you won’t get that from Jim Brown obviously.
He was quite plausible abut his role although remembered things that made him look good very clearly but then had little recollection of other bits.

Apparently Robbie Keane was essentially already sold to Inter the moment we bought him - It was just a case of seeing how he would perform in the Prem for the 7 months we had him to satisfy Inter who allegedly stumped up 50% of the purchase price with a non repayment agreement if Keane was deemed a flop at that level.

Watch out for the murmurs!

Geoffrey Robinson ?
Robinson offered £10m supposedly in a long term loan but then demanded his cash back at a point when he knew Richardson couldn't pay so he took control of the club - or so the story goes! True or not it doesn't really matter if you accept new money then you're always exposed to a boardroom takeover.

Serves him right after what he cost British Leyland

Robinson lent the £6m to buy him. That's outlawed now but he effectively owned Robbie's registration. So he went to Inter and Robinson was paid off. The balance went on the gobshite Craig Bellamy, then Lee Hughes the year after, I suppose.
