Why are linesmen letting play go on for absolutely ages before blowing the rasing the flag for offside?

Surely once someone is offside and they touch the ball, it's offside so irrelevant what then happens?

They’ve been told not to flag until the play is finished because of VAR.

It didn't apply yesterday because of the immediacy between the offside and (foul) by Pickford .
But had there been ssy a five second interval pulling the decision instantly would have prevented Van Dykes injury IMO.
So letting it progress could have unintended consequences.
Not the smartest rule IMO.

That's fine, but if the linesman is going to give offside anyway, what's the point?

Psychologically, the attaching player will be effected anyway, because they'll be thinking am I offside and it may impact the outcome.

The idea is that if the linesman flags immediately and play is stopped if VAR shows it was the wrong decision you can't go back. If they let the play conclude and then flag if VAR shows they were wrong any goal scored can stand.

Yeah...definitely for the better. Don't want someone stopping when through and then finding out he was on anyway.
