You’ve missed Tavares who was mostly deployed as a RW and I’d argue Paterson gave you AM backup as well. So you could argue we’re weaker across the whole front line without Tavares, Paterson, Rapha, and Bassette.
I can only imagine the joy among our fanbase if just two of those started
None are good enough now for where we want to be

We still have a good team but it feels like the squad's been weakened. If Sheaf, Raphael and Obikwu are not in the matchday squad anymore (as they had been), then who replaces them.

The point is they can come on and give those who are good enough a break when we don’t need them or they’re carrying an injury.

I'm sure its been done loads of times, but lets just do it. I'm doing the team that started the last game as the 11 btw, i'm assuming Sakamoto will be in, as will Woolfenden soon enough but here we go.

First 11:
Rushworth
Van Ewijk
Thomas
Kitching
Dasilva
Grimes
Torp
Rudoni
Thomas-Asante
Wright
Mason-Clark

Subs:
Wilson
Kesler-Hayden
Woolfenden
Brau
Latibeaudiere
Eccles
Allen
Sakamoto
Simms

Bidwell would be the only senior player outside the matchday squad if that was it.

That bench is very defensively heavy and not many options attacking wise to change a game

I agree. Simms would have been classed as a very good bench striker not that long ago but it says a lot that we feel that way.
He still has potential to offer something, but he doesnt necessarily have the pace or trickery to break down a defence. Look at Monga who came off the bench for Leicester and got an assist straight away, we don't have a youngster or player like that.

I'm keen to hear what Lampard thinks.
Well, you know, as a manager you always want more don’t you haha. But no seriously I’m happy to get Luke in, he is a quality addition. I know Doug and the recruitment team work hard behind the scenes and not everything comes off. We’ve got a good group at the club already that I trust and I’m confident this will be a successful season.

I suppose the frustration is, although again, i don't see the point in going on about it much... switch just 2/3 players on that bench with some better quality and you're not just talking about a very strong first 11, you are talking about real good depth too. I actually hope we're not ruling out the free market as there are some decent pick ups there but i don't expect us to use it at all.

This was my frustration. People make out I was asing for the world and going to bankrupt the club.

Signing Patrick Roberts and Alan Browne on loan and we look instantly stronger and have a lot more.

We should have got 2 more in no doubt about it, we look very thin now but we still should have enough to be there or thereabouts

January needs to be a positive window and we need to definitely recruit 2/3 to help the second half of the season push

Not particularly bothered about either of those players as individuals, but yeh i see what you are saying. We could have done something no doubt.
Its particularly baffling that we didn't pick up another wide forward as we know we were looking even in Jan with Matondo falling through. To not get it sorted over a whole summer is a bit of a fuck up.

Both those players are better than Allen and MVE/KKH as rotation options

Has the recruitment policy been that great recently?

Dunno! Why, you asking me?
I think we recruit well generally as you are asking me for some reason, i'd imagine our targets were good ones. But we missed them, so we're short, which isn't ideal.

I’m not asking you particularly just posing a question to the forum

I agree. Just Sakamoto and Simms really.

The only other thing we could do is to push Torp or Rudoni further forward, although Torp is better shooting from around the edge of the box and Rudonin is better bursting into the box much as O'Hare used to.

Breaking it down,

Bringing in Rushworth as a replacement for Collins, even though he's not made a particularly brilliant start. POSITIVE

Signing KKH so we're not relying on MvE being fit for 50 games a year. POSITIVE

Brau in, with Bidwell looking increasingly like he's deteriorating, but probably could have done with offloading him as we don't need 3 senior LB's POSITIVE

Woolfenden replacing Binks POSITIVE

Selling Sheaf. He's had injury trouble last couple of years and has been superceded by Grimes as a 6 and Torp as an 8 so getting a reported £6.5m for what is now a squad rotation player is a decent fee. And if that is the role then Eccles is more than capable of filling that gap in the squad. Sheaf can't shoot for toffee and arguably slowed down our attacking play, but when fit and playing his best he's very good. If we were going to lose one of the higher value players, Sheaf would have been my pick. POSITIVE, JUST

Loaning out Bassette, Obikwu and Dausch with no incomings. Good for the players as to be fair none of them were going to feature much in squads, let alone get minutes on the pitch. Still have Simms and BTA as back-up strikers but somehow still feels like it leaves us light in the striker department. SLIGHT NEGATIVE.

Loaning out of Raphael. Though he's far from a starter, he has been a bit more involved and gave some sort of creative option off the bench. Now relying on moving our best striker or a LB to LW if EMC gets injured, and we've got a CF filling in at RW which seems to be working at the moment. Other than that we're looking at RB's to replace Sakamoto. NEGATIVE.

We're really relying on us not picking up many injuries or suspensions to our first XI until Xmas.

So in conclusion I'm happy with what we've done. It just doesn't quite feel like we've done enough though and needed a couple more in.
