Playing devils advocate here, maybe the other hotel was rejected because the planning committee was taking this hotel into account?

I mean I’m all for Wasps bashing, but this has been in place for a while

They were granted an option to apply for planning for a hotel they were going to build as it was needed for city of culture.

It has now been admitted that the hotel won't be ready for city of culture while planning for other hotels in the area, that would be ready in time, has been refused. Now it is being said Wasps won't be building or paying for anything. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but how is this better for the taxpayer than a hotel chain leasing the land off the council then building and operating their own hotel?

It's a car park full of lorries, I don't think that counts as a hotel

Surely you take things into account when they are actually built?

Wasps are getting ready to submit plans to build a new hotel outside the Ricoh Arena.

A new hotel has long been mooted but took a step forward in July 2018 after Coventry City Council’s cabinet granted Wasps Holdings Limited (WHL) a new long lease over Car Park C in order to facilitate a 150-bed hotel.

The rugby club had been given a deadline of November this year to submit a planning application.

But this has now been extended until the end of February 2020.

While not revealing the exact deadline, a spokesman for Wasps confirmed they are planning to submit a planning application in the new year.

They added that they do not wish to comment further on the plans at this stage.

It was originally hoped the hotel would be completed in time for Coventry’s year as the UK City of Culture in 2021, but this is now highly unlikely.

The new hotel is hoped to help support events and conferencing at the Ricoh, such as the huge gigs it has hosted recently including the Spice Girls and The Rolling Stones.

Wasps will only be able to enter into the new lease once planning consent has been granted, but the council can surrender back the lease if development does not commence within two years.

The Ricoh already contains the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel with around 120 bedrooms.

Other schemes for hotels have previously come forward and failed.

Yeah, I get that but if the council have thrown their lot in with Wasps, they’re working on the assumption that it will be built.

So they had a 150 year lease that required WASPS to
get planning by November 2019 - which they miss

Land owner over the road says well I will build a hotel on my land then

Oh no you wont say CCC, and give WASPS another 3 months to get their planning and retain the 150 year lease

I think I'm right in saying they don't have a lease at all on car park c, that still belongs to the council. They were given an option of a lease if they got planning permission to build a hotel approved by November.

They didn't and it now seems they might not be building the hotel themselves at all. In the meantime at least 2 other hotel applications, which would have been built in time for city of culture, have been turned down on the basis they would take business away from the city centre.

The CET article says they were granted a long lease "to facilitate" a 150 bed hotel in July 2018

What ever that means

Any chance of shifting this thread over to the "Ricoh row" forum? It's got bugger all to do with football...

Apologies for the late reply but had a little trip to China to deal with, taken apart by a far superior team, this was the first game i've watched that would make me think we are in trouble, half decent team put out but totally out played in every department.

How very , very self indulgent of you, but why are you posting on this thread ? Haven't you got lots of friends elsewhere you could discuss this with ? No one on here cares one jot about Wasps at all.
It's extremely sad that you feel the need to seek attention on here . If i was Wasps superfan I'd want to chat with fellow Wasps/ Rugby supporters, not on a football forum.

50p for every seat sold, just found it on the Wasps site. I would be surprised if Higgs has ever seen a penny of this, not sure where it would be in the accounts either. As nothing obvious in the Wasps Holdings accounts. On gates of average 18k with say 3k average in the Higgs Stand, that should be a donation of £30k or so every season

I thought that Wasps originally committed to developing the land and was one of the key points in the council's decision to do a deal with Wasps. Came out from that "behind closed doors" council meeting that no-one wanted to discuss - commercial confidentiality etc.

Think that was just thrown in for the purpose of the media, never been anything concrete. Wasps still haven't applied for even outline planning consent for it.
