Monaco (21 Viewers)

Few things to note, Monaco finished top 3 in the league only behind Marseille and PSG. They finished 17th in champions league table ahead of Man City and Juve. They’re a good team… albeit a weakened lineup, they’re still a slick operation.

Positives are Grimes and Sheaf had moments of good sharp possession play particularly in the first 15-20. Perry is positive to see come through at CB.

Main concern comes from the disconnection between midfield and strikers. Appreciate its pre-season, however with the front line taking flack, it would be nice to see them off the mark, get some confidence. Tactically it’s been a problem for us and Monaco never really felt threatened. A defeat preseason can be a wake up call, however this felt demoralising even though it was just for minutes in legs.

There's definitely some middle ground between the "We're fucked" crowd and the "it literally means nothing" faction:

- The opening 20 was good, we looked slick
- Some of the 2nd string are NOT good enough anymore (Allen, Bidwell, Wilson)
- We should never play a 442
- Monaco showed how important physicality is. That 6'5 CM they had in the 2nd half was INCREDIBLE. He made Allen look like a competition winner. All their defenders were 6'2+, fast and strong. This is something we need to try and emulate, getting stronger and quicker all over the pitch.

Posters also need to understand the levels within top leagues across Europe, there's literally 4 leagues within the Premier League

On a more serious note - no Rapha & Binks…

Whats going on there?
Looking at how breathless Binks was in the pre season videos he's probably injured or not considered fit enough or on his way.

As for Rodrigues, there is a Hilssner vibe about him. Though, on the other hand, he was taken on the pre season tour so perhaps he's just injured as all.

Russell Martin said he was totally shocked how quick and physical Premiership players were when Southampton got promoted.
It's why the promoted teams often struggle.
The only way lesser players can get near these types of teams is to be aggressive and the opposition take it easy. Happens occasionally in the cup, but rarely in a friendly.
To try to play a high line against these type of teams is suicidal.

That 6'5 CM in the second half only turned 19 two days ago 🤯

It makes sense. MVE is our quickest player and he’d get left in the dust by wingers like Semenyo, Martinelli and Luis Diaz. Meanwhile we’ve still got plodders like Bidwell, Allen and Lati getting playing time.

The benefit of playing teams like Monaco is that when we're facing off against Hull playing the same tactic everything seems to happen a lot slower for the players. I'm glad we've got some decent opposition this pre-season.

P.S. Fuck off Wilson
