Why, 6 years after Brexit, have we not taken control of our borders as promised?

What I don't understand is how it's abusing the asylum system. You get assessed, and decided if your claim is valid or not. If it's valid, you get asylum (where's the problem?!?) and if not, then it's up to government to take the appropriate steps at that point. It's at that point that government have to look.

Or are we hoping to demonise the six out of ten who aren't from Albania, and those from Albania who may actually have a genuine case for asylum? Before you know it, we'll have a Tory leadership candidate wanting to change the definition of asylum so we don't have to let genuine asylum seekers into the country...

Frustrate our efforts to abandon a just and fair assessment of somebody's human rights.

Yeah...

It's bizarre. The judicial process is there to guarantee people get a just and fair hearing, and that applies for anything that goes through it. It's how we can be confident rapists are rapists, murderers are murderers, and that the right person is getting punishment.

Ditto, that somebody is not actually being sent back somewhere for years of painful torture and suffering...

Some always exploit any system, but the system is there to protect those who need protecting first and foremost, and that should never be forgotten.

Grrr. These lefty lawyers with their different laws to the righty lawyers.

Wait! What? There’s only one law for everyone? So does that mean that they’re just lawyers doing their jobs? What next? MP’s doing their jobs? What is the world coming too?

Truly shocking. It's amazing how the policies of the National Front a few decades ago are now those espoused by the Conservative Party. Not long ago no one who wasn't proud to say they were a racist would have dreamt of saying such things, like we should deport them all to Africa. Disgusting stuff.

The other thing with this lefty lawyer thing (actually not just this lefty lawyer thing, pretty much every claim from this government) is how stupid they think the general public is to buy their lies, they have nothing but contempt for the electorate.

If I was being positive I’d say that they’re scared of how clever the electorate is so they’re unwilling to give us the truth/facts. Sadly they’ve been getting away with lying for so long you’ve got to say they think we’re stupid. I think/hope that’s changing.

Don't forget it's costing us £5,000,000 a day to keep them, we could spend that on the NHS.

To keep who? People being tortured and abused in their home country, coming to us for sanctuary? People who then become upstanding members of our society, more than many people born in this country, because they appreciate what a privilege it is to live in a tolerant, open society that doesn't pre-judge people?

People who've been doused in water and then casually electrocuted? People who've been tied to a chair and had lighters burn the soles of their feet? People who get to watch their partner be slowly pulled apart, literally, in front of them?

It's not an either / or. It's humanity and compassion for people in need.

And it’s a price we’ve been proud to wear as a badge of honour rather than a chain around our neck

The obvious solution is a processing centre in Calais but it won't play well with the base.

You’re a little light on details so I’ll help you out. According to the Home Offices own fact sheet on the issue it’s currently costing the UK £4.7M a day, it states that the biggest issue is that we’re so inefficient at processing them that they’re in hotels etc much longer than they need to be. If we processed them quicker (remember that the vast majority will be granted asylum) they can get a job, pay taxes, start being a contributor and stop being a burden. The government is actively seeking 160K immigrant workers for the care system from India and the Philippines as we speak. On a separate note the NHS’s doctor of the year last year was a Syrian refugee who arrived here under his own steam as a teenager. If you’re serious about helping the NHS you need the government to clear the backlog, let them work contributing through the tax system and no doubt many of which will work in the NHS in some capacity.

This is totally irrelevant because this is concerning uncontrolled arrival of people coming across the channel. Your argument is we need xxx for this and that so let's allow xxx in via the channel. Nonsense.

Yeah. The criminal gangs are in control. Shame the government won’t open up a legitimate route for asylum seekers negating the need for criminal gangs.

I didn't realise there was ever a "need"for criminal gangs.

If you’re an asylum seeker trying to reach the UK they’re all you have. Until the government opens a safe route they aren’t going anywhere. So get used to them.

The present incumbent declared Muslims to look like letterboxes and burglars in a national newspaper. Not long after I started teaching a student copied the ‘letterbox’ line to describe someone’s mum. He got suspended, the PM got the top job and a cult following
