I have massive sympathy for the Kurds, but I think this abbreviated comment from another website sums the situation up well:

"3 to 7 billion population growth in 50 years, most of it in the 3rd world thanks to modern development, medicine and money. Capable of swamping our little island, and our continent, at a stroke. I am honestly past caring about any of them. I care about my people and my country more. Our ancestors fought for centuries and went through hell to give us the society we have, the migrants should do the same. The fact they choose not to and prefer to maintain their despicable regressive, religious, tribal cultures tells me a lot about their mentality. They collectively bring nothing good to the West, just more cultural strife, overcrowding and cost and we don’t owe them anything. I’m sick of it.

The concept of asylum has gone way beyond its original purpose; temporary shelter in a safe neighbouring country when your country is at war. If asylum were a more clearly and narrowly defined temporary arrangement, no citizenship available, no chain migration, with quick, unchallengeable deportation, then I would accept it more. But it has become a pick and mix free for all, with permanence, available to anyone who ‘wants a better life’. Once you’re in you’re in. Even if you rape or murder someone the lawyers will help you stay. It’s so wrong it makes me furious."

Well, with the funding, planning and British fiancee that she had in place, I'm just shocked they thought that was the best option.
If my Mrs. Was in France with a legal visa for Italy still in hand, cash in the bank and me the other side of the channel, there is no way on earth I would have let/asked her to get in a dinghy.
Plenty of other options to be together come to mind....

Anyway....back to the bigger picture....the uk and French govts. need to stop acting like cunts and sort it out......

Id have assumed that if he was a British citizen and she was becoming his wife she’d have a right to come over at least on a temp basis prior to marriage. I don’t have a detailed knowledge of the rules or the application process though so assume I could be wrong. Anyway all that’s kind of irrelevant now, it’s a sad, unnecessary death.

Agree with comments above about us having to suck it up and ignore Macron acting like a prick and work together on finding a solution. Banning Patel from meeting on solving the problem is childish at best and could cost lives at worst. Im not saying for a minute that her intellect and knowledge would’ve sorted everything but we will have to be part of the solution so our exclusion is just petty.

Wow, surprised by that but as I say I don’t have much/detailed knowledge. Know you’ve had experience of settlement abroad etc so thought you’d have an decent idea. Guessing it’s something to stop pretend/sham marriages but thought she’d at least get temp rights

Despite what some would have you believe the UK is far from a soft touch. If I was to marry to my partner and we lived in separate countries, I’d become eligible for Italian citizenship. The UK doesn’t allow it; if we were to get married she wouldn’t be eligible.
Getting a temp visa unless you’re fairly well off Is not easy either.
Back in the day I used to see a Kurdish girl and her friends had these same kinds of issues.

I'm talking to you . You clearly think we owe it to France to take more simply because of nothing.
You clearly think the deaths of people crossing by boat and the money made by people traffickers is somehow collateral damage we need to accept for all the evils of our foreign policy. Post Blair or course.

That quote is from UnHerd.

A highly recommended read and vastly superior to the shite in the Guardian these days.

Unherd is reactionary bollocks. Started out under a premise it didn't stick to and has rapidly declined.

You can tell how quality of MP’s has fallen when the nearest thing to sensible debate seems to take place in the Lords.

I've long been talking about how to scrap the Lords but lately they've been the only ones keeping any faith in the system at all.

Maybe I got it wrong and should have been looking to scrap the Commons

In this particular quote you reference the work of your ancestors. The people that pillaged, colonised and warmongered across vast swathes of the world.
Are you now advocating people from these other countries do the same?

You can't respond because you have no answer. You simply refer to foreign policy conveniently forgetting the Blair era.
You are complicit with advocating what is going on across the channel as satisfactory. In so doing you accept the deaths and the traffickers.

Nobody is advocating it. They’re accepting it will happen when land borders tighten up and no safe routes are provided. Going “grrr traffickers” isn’t a policy.

There was a case a few of years ago about a nurse who came here from Asia (don’t recall where exactly), met and married an English doctor, raised a family, worked in the NHS to retirement at which point we tried to deport her. Took several appeals and eventually a bit of common sense to keep her here with her family. This was during Mays reign as Home Secretary and the hostile environment policy.

Captain Smug. It's because of our foreign policy is your total justification for what's happening. Very philosophical but just because others, including me, want a stop to this you won't have it. It seems to me you want a kind of "let nature take it's course". However, as you lash the cat-o-nine-tails across your back every morning you'll soon berate everyone like me when, as will happen, more people drown and more cash goes into the pockets of the traffickers.

What on earth are you going on about.

You are one of the few who hasn't shown a single shred of compassion or sympathy for the victims, all you've done is question their motives including saying that having family over in the UK is a poor excuse and then it turns out that's the exact reason one of the victims made the journey. I don't think you can sit on a high horse.

Whereas you cry hysterics at everything . I think you need to try and learn to read a bit more to enable you to understand sentences. I think I've expressed my sympathy to the victims but perhaps you need to pull yourself together emotionally and stick to the facts. Take a deep breath and try to read.

To be fair, somebody not saying anything is probably better than people who pretend so they can use it to bash politicians.

It's difficult to understand your previous post, it's just a stream of words with no real point to it.

Do you now accept that having family in the UK is a genuine reason for people making the crossing?

By boat ? Having paid a gangster thousands to get across ? No.
If you do accept it then don't cry crocodile tears when these poor souls die.
Is that straightforward enough for you or does it need simplifying ?

So you don't think it's a genuine reason despite it being confirmed as the exact reason one of those poor people made the journey.

Right.

You know best I guess.

Let's face it, most of the people arguing here would want open borders.

It makes the debate very difficult.

Most of you on this thread.

If anything is generally said about stopping migrant crossings it is shot down, unless of course it is to suggest making it legal.

Political threads on here are generally the same. As much as I despise the tories, 90% of it is bashing them.

It's boring and shows why a lot of posters don't bother coming onto the off topic chat anymore.
