Is that the club saying it or just the CET?

The CT just states he commands a fee. He can't be that much surely. Would be worth a fee.

Pressley is still hoping to sign two more strikers, one of whom is Bournemouth’s Josh McQuiod on loan.

“We’re still actively chasing McQuoid,” said the manager who dismissed reports that City are in for Michael Higdon of Dutch club NEC and who is a former team-mate of Pressley’s from their time at Falkirk.

But although City have “spoken to a few people on him,” his current club require a fee for the player who scored 14 goals last season which effectively puts him out of Coventry price range.

Where exactly in the above text (direct from article) does Pressley say that?

Why does Pressley even want McQuoid so badly? Bournemouth fans have nothing but bad things to say about him and he hardly set the world alight for Peterborough last season. You'd think he was some 30 goal a season world beater with the way Pressley's going after him.

Very true words. Sounds like a waste of talent. Sounds like a striker Adam Barton.

Much rather go for the higdon man who does sound good and he commands a fee then pay it. We should have the money

Pressley's comments on this are really worrying. I actually thought he may be given a small amount of the Wilson money but this pretty much confirms he won't.

No according to Kingokings Barton is better - he was signed for a fee.

How else does anyone expect the legal fees and another season in Northampton to be paid for?

There might be a bit left over for the shareholders to get a dividend for once. Or they might even buy a few bricks and start a collection for the new stadium.

£75,000 of the top of my head? Garry Collier was 5 times the player according to Kingokings.

I think that in the real world, it is a fairly uncontentious statement to suggest that you may be able to get a better player for a fee, than you may get for a free transfer.

That does not necessarily imply a linear relationship between fee and "eventual value".

Nope just saying generally a fee involving a player will be better than a free. Obviously frees are good players but we have money or so I thought anyway.

And as stated I've heard mcquiod is a very talented striker but rarely produces anything when it matters just like Barton.

Just corrected you Grendel. You're welcome.

What is? I am merely pointing out that in this league transfer fees are rarely deployed and contracts generally are short so many players are available on frees who have reasonable quality. The perversity of a counter argument is that next season baker would be free and so would have been derided as inferior to Adam Barton for that reason.

The point is Grendel, sometimes a small fee is worth it. Yes money can be thrown away, you can get good players for free....but when it comes to the final pieces it is worth reinvesting a bit of money.

Right players, right attitude, right ability, future sale on potential....occasionally you need to spend money to stay in those parameters.

And that's all I was trying to say but Grendel starts the usual argument. I don't want to argue I just want to talk football.

I can't imagine this bloke costing a lot of money around 1-200k. I mean just sold CW so we could get a marquee signing.

This was always the problem. Most people don't mind CW going but now it looks like a bad sell as no money is being reinvested.

There has been an assumption (mostly suggested by CET) that the club won't pay a fee... but maybe they just won't pay a fee for him.

We do need some strikers - perhaps a fee could be better spent elsewhere?

Taking someones point to a ridiculous level and then criticizing it, saying someone thinks something they clearly dont. I personally think these kind of snarky comments cause more arguments and superlong bickering threads than insults do.

Baldock joined Bristol City in August 2012 for an undisclosed fee
(Top league scorer last season)
On 31 July 2013, League One side Peterborough United broke their previous transfer record to sign Assombalonga from Watford on a four-year deal. (Second top scorer)
Callum (third top scorer -academy one off)

One good goal scoring season in league 1 cannot be taken as chapter and verse anymore. The standard of league 1 is far lower than when the likes of Rhodes, Holt and Lambert were making a name for themselves in it, nowadays average and failed championship strikers score for fun in it (Madden, Clarke, Lisbie, Mooney and Westcarr to name but a few). Callum Wilson could very easily fail to produce in the league above, so getting 2.5 million for a player with one good season under his belt (and replacing him with Tudgay who has the capabilities to score plenty in this division) is good business. Go on the Football Forum and other teams fans actually predict us to at the very least challenge for the play offs. We've signed good players for this division and Elvis has said more are to come, imo we are shaping up to have our strongest squad prior to a league 1 season. Have a bit fecking optimism, we might even get back to the Ricoh ffs.

Not sure that post is relevant to what I said. I was just pointing out, which is the rule in 90% of the time, a transfer fee will generally secure a better class of player

Fuck me lads. You lot should advise Man City. They'd save a fortune.

No, of course transfer fee has nothing to do with ability.

No transfer is guaranteed either way, but that's no reason to never spend money. Fact is for free you're either getting someone not on form or you're getting someone who has left their last club looking for more cash. Not sure either is a great sign.

Am I really having to argue whether a transfer normally gets you a better class of player than a freebie?

This is up there with the Ricoh makes no difference to signing or retaining players.

(Which thank goodness to the managers and players saying it does it has finally been put to bed)

There are exceptions to every rule however if you sell a player for 2.5 million if you want to get promoted dont bulk at paying out 10%. if that transfer fee gets you a the player who will get you promotion.

Just depends if you trust your manager to spend the money wisely.

This bloke TBF does look like the real deal.
