Shows how up themselves our new targets have become. Time was you could rely on Phil Masinga being spotted at KFC and Robert Earnshaw filling up his vehicle at the Tesco forecourt on the Arena.

So it turns out we’re not skint then? There’s a surprise.
There's skint and then there's skint.

Most of the time it's to do with cash flow with football clubs. Most probably we owe millions for players we have bought but will be owed millions from the players we have sold. We won't be paying for Grimes in one go. But we rarely get to know the terms of sales. But when the man on the street is skint it's because he doesn't have a pot to piss in.

The point was that it was another made up rumour on here that quickly became fact.

I’m amazed that many people commenting on here have obviously never seen him play. We’ve played Swansea 9 times since we have been back in the championship, have never beaten them, and he has been outstanding in most games.
Every time we have played them since coming back up I’ve left the game thinking how is Grimes not playing above this level. I thought he always looked better than the likes of Flynn Downes who went to the premier league

It’s more concerning that people see that he’s 29 and assume he must use a zimmer frame during games.

Exactly! Gary McAllister was running games in the premier league at 35/36. Sometimes you need to invest in players for the here and now and not always think about sell-on value

Yup. Saddle peddled it too I think

No loans and no oldies is some other myths fans have made up it seems.

I would imagine it's an anti Doug king thing

We're the only team in the league without a loanee, so it's not a myth.
And it's clear there's something behind his unwillingness to sign experience players as we've stripped the squad of them

Hopefully with the contract given to Bidwell and this signing (which hopefully goes through), he's seen sense.

One of the reasons I started to come round to the idea of Lampard is I thought King might be more likely to listen to a 'name'. I've no idea if that is the case but it seems plausible to me.

We were trying to sign Browne in the summer who’s the same age as Grimes. I’ve said all along that we need more experienced players in the squad but I don’t think it’s true there’s a policy where we won’t even consider them.

Yeah I guess we don’t have any loans so it’s not with basis to say Doug doesn’t like loans but instead of being anti loan which gets peddled on here he gave his reasons crystal clear at the fans forum…. Think of it for now currently also. We could sign a loan from the PL say Chelsea because of FL but it’s going to be an unproven young player probably a teenager. That’s really the last thing we need right now and then even if we did sign him then where does he play? And when? Chelsea aren’t going to send him to sit on the bench and make sub appearances. And even if he did play and did well we lose him in May anyway.

So I don’t think it’s anti loans it’s all the things they come with.

There's definitely been a change in recruitment policy and Saddkes has said as much. Of course, he's not always right, and he doesnt claim to be, but I definitely think there was,a shift, hopefully that's now going to be sorted.

Yes indeed. We signed him at 31 for £3 million back in the 1995/6. He was probably our best player for 4 seasons but we refused to give him a decent extension at 35. He then went to Liverpool on a free. One of the worst bits of business we ever did to let him go. He then played some 80 odd games for Liverpool and had some of his best career form.

So just shows if a player looks after himself, stays relatively injury free, mid thirties is not anything to be too concerned about. At 36/7 he was running the midfield of Liverpool!!

I think we should get plenty out of Grimes. 😀
