I wouldn't be surprised if we made a move for Esse in the summer if we go up.

Personally I wouldn't.

I think he could be a very good player in the future but he's got a lot of learning to do and is nowhere near PL ready. Given what Palace paid for him he's not going to be a cheap signing and this summer we're going to need all the transfer money for players that will be able to make an impact straight away rather than expensive development players. Hopefully in seasons beyond that we can get more of a mix of development and first team but not this year.

Yeah if we could pick him up for pocket change and stick him in L1 to learn the game then fair enough, but I’d expect that’s what Palace will do with him. We need players who are going to be useful next season really. Once we’re established we can drop £10m on a player who isn’t ready.

He looks like he’s got a lot of learning to do, and I’d rather not have someone like that in a season where you need all hands on deck.

He’s four years older than Kai Andrews. Why do people keep thinking he’s a teenager?

Age is irrelevant to that role. Poch said it takes 18-months for a foreign player to become properly acclimatised to English football. Brighton sign players 12 months ahead of considering them for the first team for integration purposes.

We might not see the best of him until 27/28 - but the recruitment team wouldn't have taken that chance if they didn't think he could make an impact

The 24 year old Brighton signed from abroad in the summer has made 24 appearances out of a possible 31…

Obviously not every signing... the example you chose is a guy who played 12 times in the Champions League last season & was capped 10 times for Belgium before signing.

Here is a better one. Moises Caicedo was signed in January 2021 and didn't play a single minute for Brighton that season. He was then loaned out to Belgium before being integrated into the first team.

He was younger than Markelo of course but the principle is the same (our recruitment strategy is clearly to target players aged 22-24 whereas Brighton target teenagers). Markelo will be 24 the season after next & that is when I think we're hoping he can push to be the starting RW

Never quite sure how integrating them into the team and sending them on loan to Belgium for a year really works.

I just don’t buy that we’re making signings for more than the majority of our squad then sticking them in the reserves for 18 months.

Markelo without doubt will be one of our LW options next year.

I don’t think we will sign a. LW
Unless he’s shown an unbelievable level in training I’d be surprised if he’s our 2nd choice left winger next year. I also think he is more of a RW just that Yang is our only natural LW behind EMC.

Why did we sign him for near £5m when we were clear top of the league if we don’t have plans for him in the prem
Might still be involved, might be loaned out. Just can’t see him being our only back up left winger. Still young so plenty of time to get our moneys worth out of him.

Markelo will be our cheat code in the Premier League!

Dont compare enjoy them both, they’re different sorts of players. Markelo being blessed with more pace and crossing ability and Esse with more trickery and flair
