Used to be a lot of people very scared of IRA terrorism back in the day.

Many older than that will say they lived in fear of a nuclear attack during the Cold War. There were information films and booklets and I believe schools even did drills occasionally.
Yeah, I remember the IRA threat. People were scared for sure.

Yeah, I remember being very scared. My family and friends too.

We were convinced there would be a nuclear war at one point.

Can only speak for myself and those around me though.
Just spoke to my missus and she says she was terrified and they actually had it in their syllabus at her school and they were taught about what to do in the event of an attack.

She's younger than me, so this would have been mid to late 80's I think.

I never had a single worry.

I remember Threads causing a bit of a stir but nowadays I think if something is brought given prominence on the BBC then it's probably propaganda.

Suspect named.

British citizen of Syrian descent.
I hate hearing stuff like that.

It just fuels the notion that people can't integrate.

Some obviously can't, but many more can and do. This though continues to paint the picture that even being British born, won't stop extremist terrorists.

He's British born and I would say from the pics, must have been here at least 30 plus years. 😥

Oh, I just saw. He's 35.

We were told to get under the table which I'm not sure would have been hugely effective in the event of nuclear war. We were taught about what an air raid siren was and I'm 99% sure there was an air raid siren at some point when I was a teen.

As for the IRA they definitely felt a threat. You had an organised group undertaking a bombing campaign on the mainland. With the places being targeted there was a feeling that if you were in any public place there was a risk.

My mom told me during the cold war that at school they had her doing lockdown drills. Do we still do that now?
I think schools have done lockdown drills in case an intruder gets onto school premises. I imagine those that are or have been teachers will be able to confirm or deny.

You can tell how long someone has been in a country from a few photos?

They are saying British born and he was 35. I just assumed he had been here for 35 years. He may have moved abroad for a while I guess. Never considered that

I just assumed, born and bred

The press are only saying British citizen aren't they? Could have got citizenship 2 weeks ago for all we know so far.

Yeah, I didn't pick up on that to be honest.

Will have to wait and see how long he's been here.

It just makes it worse, the longer he's been a British citizen.
