Made the trip up to Crewe to watch the Sky Blues, optimistic after our spirited performance against Birmingham. With a few thousand City fans dominating the atmosphere at Gresty Rd and the sun shining I felt it could be a good day. Never did I anticipate feeling, possibly the angriest I've ever felt as a City fan, an hour and a half later as I feel the club reached its lowest point in its history.
Apart from a bit of early pressing from City, we didnt worry Crewe in the slightest. The diamond shape which I feel has unconvincingly shown promise proved highly uneffective as City lacked width and attacking ingenuity against a fairly average league one side. For some strange reason this club still believes in lumping it forward to short arse strikers who don't want to play in that style. As proven in Cov's first goal against Birmingham if we work the ball wide and on the floor, with movement from the strikers we can score goals. I dont like to single out individual players but today I will. Chris Hussey who I believed was a half decent championship player has lost all confidence on the ball and became a culprit of playing these pathetic diagonal long balls that most of the time come to nothing and today he showed a complete lack of quality. With the fans getting more agitated as the game wore on with City looking completely clueless, they began to vent their anger towards the players. Now I dont know what exactly was said to Kevin Kilbane but I can only imagine it would have been someone complimenting him on his dyer performance began to argue back with the fans. Now as club captain and a veteran of English football I believe he had no right to turn around and react to a fan who has paid their money that pays his wages and been supporting the club longer than he has been playing for it, showing a complete lack of respect and professionalism. At the end of the game, after watching City concede a sloppy goal, create one half chance and play with an overall shortage of passion, enthusiasm and quality, fans began to chant 'Youre not fit to wear the shirt' which I believe couldnt be anymore true.
I believe Shaw has blown his chance, showing he is not the man to lead us through a long season of tough games. I think we need a manager who is able to come in with a plan of how we should play, someone that isnt scared to take a few players down a peg or two and get rid of these ego's some of them possess. They are League One players for a reason and they need to be treated like League One players if they want to get anywhere. After todays performance we need someone that would give them a right going over and none of this 'arm round the shoulder' which I dont believe Shaw has in him. We need a manager with experience who's done promotion before but not someone thats just done it once like another Micky Adams or Iain Dowie.
The decision the board face in the next week or so is crucial for the future of this club as theyve got it wrong too many times before and look at us now. Personally, I feel this club has lacked a sense of familiarity, with the players and managers door ever revolving, for some time. That is why I would like to see someone with an affiliation with the club who will bring passion for the job and a love for the city as well experience in this league. The man I feel that could fill that role is Coventry born, Carlisle manager Greg Abbott. Time will tell what the board will do but I just hope they make the right decision to get this club back where we want it.
