Plus we rarely get it over the first defender.

There must be some stats out there for goals/chances created on long throws v short throws against Hull. Safe to assume that's the reason we opted for that tactic yesterday.

A few of them yesterday were his longest yet.

If only we had a big, gangly 6'3 striker in the box..

Does anyone else find our obsession with long throws a bit embarrassing?

I have two reasons. It doesn't suit our style of play as we have so many players who are really good on the ball.

Secondly - we should be better than that, especially against poor teams like Hull. Their defenders just lapped it up!
Yea it was bloody crazy when we have BTA up front and they have two huge centre halves heading everything away for fun.

We should of played it short and looked to work the ball toTorp for a shot from the edge of the box. But that would mean playing to our strengths and we are reluctant to do that.

It's not about having a big gangly six plus footer in the box, we do not attack the ball enough either in the air or otherwise in ALL areas of the pitch.

Dasilva should look at Brau with throw ins he gets it straight into play and we can get moving Dasilva takes ages and then throws it to the wrong player.

MVE we have to mix it up.

Corners as soon as the ref has got involved in the wrestling in the box it’s almost pointless putting it straight into the box as the slightest fall he is giving a free kick.

Someone had a free header from one yesterday. All we seem to do is get the ball out wide and lump it in. It suits our dreadful style of play down to a tee.

Long throws used to work well, back in the day, when Aaron Gunnerson took them!

Early in the first half, Lampard told Kitching to bring MVE over to take a long throw from the left…

It’s a good tactic to employ to mix things up, but not when it’s telegraphed and MVE is pulled to the wrong side of the pitch - leaves our right side horribly exposed, as he sprints back!

A long throw if used right can be more effective than a corner as you generally have better control of your throw than where the ball when kicking can end up…. Ask Eccles about that with his corners hahaa

They're useful, but not if you do it everytime you get a throw anywhere near their area. They just set up for it and are on auto-pilot. Need to vary it up.

One place I'd like us to use it more is when we're further back and MvE gets the ball really quickly. The striker should be making a run towards that flank so MvE can hurl the ball down the line and we can try and get them on the turn. Chances are most times we'd end up with another throw further up the pitch. Again, not do it everytime but when they look out of position. At the moment we just hold onto the ball, let them get into position and end up playing a shirt throw to a player marked and under pressure.

They were as useful as any of our throw ins yesterday. We are quite poor at keeping the ball from them.

So 2 in the last 15 years...good ploy the long throw ...any more anyone can think of?
I'd say firstly, MVE hasn't been playing for us for 15 years, so we can ignore that stat.

Secondly, if I was a coach/analyst I would have the data for how Hull defend against long throws and ask Lampard to make a tactical decision based on that. I assume that's what's happened, regardless of our inability to score from them.

Its like saying why bother with corners!
Only 12% of corners lead to a goal only 20% lead to a shot on target so should we stop them aswell.
I'm sure our percentage would be lower then that.
Its the thought and excitement that makes it worth while. IMHO

Well if there is a defender who we are looking at for £10m then the tactics or recruitment are off
