Unattached players, they have more to prove. Especially if you can get them on a heavily incentive-based deal. Plus you can pick up players that with a bit of rehab could have significant resale value. Seeing as house analogies are all the rage around here, think about it as a choice between renting or paying a mortgage: the former is just money wasted for a short term need, the later a long-term investment

Depends on the wages and age of the unattached player. For me older/injured players (which the unattached ones tends to be) are just as much a risk, if not more than young players from the Prem.
There's been a few Prem loanee midfielders for other clubs in the past few seasons who have done really well in this league. Unfortunately there's also been Lee Sawyer for us. Would be nice to pick up an Arsenal youngster with our new style.

Most players without a club come into 3 categories.
1, Not good enough
2, Not fit enough through injury or is past sell by date
3, Too greedy
We will not end up with a No.3 anymore. We don't have the cash to waste. We already have enough of the other two groups at the club. This is how we have so many strikers at club and needed a striker to score some goals. Do we take another gamble on who is left without a club and maybe end up with mre crap, or have a few loans that we can send back. They have something to prove as most of them either are after a new contract or trying to get into the 1st team. A lot of loans end up being permanent for different reasons. I prefer to get loans that do not have to travel too far to get to us or live away from their families. A lot of loans from the Prem have at least half of their wages paid. They just want their players playing and getting experience. If we were a Prem team we would be sending players like Gael out for experience. I would be happy with a couple of players like him.
