Living Wage in Football (1 Viewer)

Just saw the advert for a Degree educated Sports Scientist to join the Academy. £15k full time, or about £8 an hour, below the Living Wage of £8.25.

What do people think about this in general? Should clubs pay the Living Wage? Is £15k a year enough for a Degree educated person? Even if it is Sports Science

Not picking on City especially, it's an issue across football. Just this advert got me thinking.

Wonder what they class as full time. Can't imagine working at a football club is a Mon - Fri, 9 - 5 job.

Suppose you'd have to compare it to similar jobs but you would think they could pay the living wage.

Do we have anyone on work fare? Know they make use of that at Pompey.

I do know someone, got a degree in sports science. He's about 22/23 now and works in car sales. Maybe salaries like this show why.

Yeah I did think that, I worked it out as 37.5 hours for 50 weeks and it's probably closer to 40. Even so, it's not like it leaves you much time to earn more. I work 39 weeks a year and get paid full time.

A greater divide between rich and poor has been in progress for a long time. Cut out the middle class, create an Elite-oriented society.

But is Sports Science really a degree subject. Same as Media Studies and the like. Made up things for people who don't like Science, Maths etc.. There aren't enough jobs in those fields anyway. How many Media 'experts' do we need? If they didn't exist, would we be any worse off.

And as for Royal Correspondents on the news channels, what's that about? How can you make a career from covering a family that most of us aren't interested in.

I remember when they wanted somebody to look after the website, they wanted a journalistic degree and it was like 14 - 15k. Along with unsociable hours.

Yeah it would be a great job, just not if you have bills to pay (I don't know his wage by the way, just couldn't physically live on that no matter how much I loved the job)

Media studies I think is a bad example? If you get a degree in media studies, you are learning how to create films in any role, considering film and tv is the biggest growing product in the world, why wouldn't more people take a degree in it?

Reading the job description, its certainly NOT a "degree level" job in any traditional sense of the word......and its also not a requirement if you have some prior experience.....

....The job itself looks like a glorified A-level sports science project to be honest......watch, film & analyse some junior & academy football & present the results.....

I'd guess most of us on here could make a half decent stab at that without the experience or a degree in sports science.....

The living wage !! Often bounded about by Cameron and Osbourne, very little about hours though the big boys such as Tesco, Sainsburys etc will pay just above minimum wage like decent fellows yet gerrymander your hours still with good guys like George and Dave on our side let's not worry eh!

It might be growing but thanks to technology it takes less people to achieve the same results. Now with way more people coming out with degrees every year than there is vacant positions the majority end up spending a few years as unpaid interns and then change careers. Music industry is the same, so many paid jobs have been replaced with unpaid interns.

My dog goes to doggy daycare, most of the girls who work there have degrees in various things - when are people going to realise its not worth racking up huge debt to get one of these degrees?

Clubs probably should pay the living wage to their non footballing staff, in the context of the super living wage the footballers get.
