there’s no way that can be given as offside - how can anyone know the millimetre when the player crossing the ball has no contact at all with his foot anymore?

I saw that on twitter, the line is all over the place, he calibrates it to the left hand grass line but you can tell it's completely different to the right one. we're never going to get it right unless the stand roof is covered in cameras so there is proper perspective.

That first picture shows you everything that is wrong with using it for marginal offsides. Look at the ball, its blurred, how can they be certain they have paused on the split second the ball is played. What do you even define that as, when the foot strikes the ball or when the ball leaves contact with the foot. Then you're looking from a camera that isn't directly inline with the players therefore bringing in issues with parallax viewing.

For me that should take a couple of seconds and VAR saying thats too tight to overrule the onpitch ruling.

Those screenshots have been done on a phone. I hope that's not how they go about doing their VAR shit. Can't rule it out though.

The show on Sky what is being done on VAR and its basically the same as that. They freeze the picture and then start drawing lines, there was one the other week where the two lines weren't parallel!

VAR only there to allow studio ‘experts’ extra waffle time to debate the value of VAR. it’s there for tv pundits not the good of the game. Get rid and before the game loses credibility. I would rather there be honest mistakes made by those in the middle than have to put up with mistakes from technology that are then discussed ad Infinitium at every opportunity in every tv studio.
I don’t mind refs getting decisions wrong in live time...but to stop the game, have numerous camera angles and still make decisions that no one can explain just shows the system for the joke it is.
Sky and BT leading with headlines ‘more VAR controversy’ and rubbing their hands with glee.

They should let people hear the discussions between them and the VAR people to see what they are saying.

Could have been a pen then, if somebody pushes in the back like that on the half way line is a pen.

I get your points, but I disagree that someone being pushed on the halfway line is a penalty nor do I think hearing the discussion will help people see anything

I strongly believe that the VAR officials should be non refs trained only to use VAR. The fact the VAR is manned by the same incompetent refs you see week in week out should give you all you need to know on how poor it was going to be.

Surely VAR refs would still have to be refs inasmuch as knowing the rules. IMO the only thing the VAR ref should be able to do is inform the ref he may want to see it again on the monitor, so it is up to the ref to decide to overturn his own decision. VAR should NOT be allowed to overrule the onfield ref.

I think a time limit of say a minute needs to be introduced - if you can't decide in that time if a decision is correct or not then it isn't a clear and obvious error.

And I agree about the 'umpire's call' as well - with the uncertainty over camera angles, exactly when the ball was struck etc there has to be a margin for error. But as I say above, that decision should be down to the onfield ref and a screen.

The main problem I see is that PL refs are not looking at the monitor at pitchside, as is done in Italy, US and was done at the world cup, fairly successfully in comparison to the current farce.

Onfield refs should still be making the decisions and VAR should only be alerting them to something they may have missed or give them another angle to look at. This whole room full of refs at Stockley park isn't work and I think it will be canned before next season starts.

Handballs are a rules issues not so much a VAR issue.

Offsides, who knows, Id like to see an "umpires call" where a certain amount of doubt such as an armpit or little toe means the lino's decision is upheld, in danger of officials not making decisions because they think VAR will just sort it out when play stops.

yeah var used fine elsewhere, dumb prem waited a year and now having their teething problems

that said offside rule needs to change if var stays. no one wants to see goals ruled out for millimetres. dont chalk goals off for a toe offside

Id still use the lines but make them thicker, maybe a foot in width, if they overlap you stick with the linos decision, if they don't then its a clear and obvious.

I love the pundits saying you can’t disallow a goal when it’s so close. What on earth do they want? Accurate decisions or not?

They need something to talk about. Used to complain about decisions being wrong. Now complaining decisions are right because there's mm in it on review.

The use of video assistant referees (VAR) in Premier League games has been given a mark of seven out of 10 by the man in charge despite strong criticism.

"I'm really pleased, honestly, with how we have started out," said Swarbrick.

City 2-0 down to United at the Etihad. Liverpool 14 clear as it stands. Leicester look the main challengers. Surely this has to be their year...

This is it now. Liverpool are what City were 2 years ago. Clearly the best and arguably, the best in the world.

Surely Liverpools title now. Has a 14 point deficit been overturned from December? I know Newcastle blew it from 12 ahead in 1996??

Impossible I would say.

Some seem to think Leicester may challenge, but I really cannot see it.

Title is wrapped up.

Yup. Going to be a bit of an anti-climax from here on in.

Can't beat a challenge going to the wire and the last day.

Liverpool are my favourite Premier League team, so I'm chuffed that the title is all but in the bag. I'd loved it to have gone to the wire but I remember last season's finish. L'Pool could have sewn it up but Man City nicked it by one point in the end. Gutted!

I think VAR should be used more closely. E.G.: Who headed that ball across the line?

You don't see that very often do you, twins playing against each other in the same match for opposing sides.

Leicester look a great team, certainly will finish in the top 4 this season.

Soyunchu has to be one of the best PL CBs at the moment.
