I know you can make figures say anything but I took a look at the average attendance of the 11 teams that have remained in the Championship since August 2008. Only took those teams so the figures not distorted by teams in one year not in next etc ie tried to compare like with like. Also turns out that most of the teams chosen are reasonably comparable to CCFC in many ways
in the 3 full seasons the %age movement from season 2008/09 is as follows (figs in brackets are inclusive of 2011/12 season to date compared to 2008/09)
Somehow I expected that CCFC fall off in crowds would be bottom of the list but it seems it isnt. It has accelerated this season, but this has also been the case in other teams although perhaps not as much. However it is difficult to extrapolate figures on uncompleted seasons. I think it is safe to say that the anti SISU effect on attendances was not that significant up until August 2011, because the fall in attendance was by no means unusual compared to the other teams used. However since then there appears to be a marked acceleration (not full season though) which is above nearly all the other teams chosen
Yes I do believe there is an effect on attendances caused by SISU, but there is a significant effect on nearly all clubs caused by such things as the recession, product tiredness, lack of success etc. Would guess at the anti SISU effect accounting for half the %age fall in crowds at the Ricoh
I still blame sisu oldskyblue because had we not been stripped of all our good players we would be there or thereabouts, with that comes high hopes and expectation which in turn brings in fans
It depends on the starting point. Ours had already steadily declined over the three previous years from when we entered the new stadium. Some of those will have originally been buoyed by expectation of promotion or having achieved promotion from L1.
As is often the case with statistics, you can report them to interpret the position that you want them to highlight.
Oh i am not letting SISU off the hook CK, just think there is more to it than them as far as the crowds are concerned. Never have agreed with their specific strategy from the start, but the overall premise that we have to live within our means I do agree with. However what that "living within means " is, I think has many alternatives - SISU picked the wrong one
Just what I said to start off with Rob, figures can be made to say a lot of things and are open to interpretation or assumptions. But I think the period is valid in that it covers the bank crisis and recession when all teams suffered. That said yes it does depend where you start from both in date and base figures (a smaller drop in numbers for one team than another could give a bigger %age drop overall). I think what the figures prove is that teams cannot rely on attendances when money is so tight for their clients and that a lot teams including CCFC have failed to minimise that risk to numbers and income (for what ever reason)
