King to give serious thought to contract offer


Coventry City striker Marlon King had admitted he is giving serious thought about signing the new contract offered to him by the new manager Andy Thorn.

After an tentative start to his Sky Blues career, both on and off the pitch, the controversial 31 year old striker has won over many fans with his performances and goals and was one of three high profile players who are out of contract in the summer, but who have all been offered new deals since Thorn became the manger of the club.

King is grateful to the club for giving him the chance to reignite his career after his release from prison last summer and is especially grateful to the fans for their support and for giving him another chance.

King has been in fine form in the latter part of the season and that has not gone unnoticed by other clubs, several of which are keen to offer him a deal should he reject the Coventry City offer.

King said,

“It is always nice to be offered a new contract. I’ll see the season out and then sit down and make the decision from there."

“I will give it some serious thought because the fans have been brilliant with me and everyone else at the club. I like to think that I have applied myself well and chipped in with a few goals and performances so it works both ways, but as I said all I am concentrating on is Norwich on Saturday and then we can take it from there.”

At 31 I guess his Premiership days are over. For me he is the one player we should attempt to keep at all costs. Westwood is a great Championship keeper but thats it. He can be replaced. Strikers that score 20 goals a season are as irreplaceable as it gets. As for Gunner he's not good enough for this league and I wouldn't have offered him a new contract.

We might be lucky and he signs. What might go in our favour is what happened when Cardiff tried to sign him on loan in Jan. The Cardiff fans forums went into melt down they didn't want him, thats why Cardiff tried to deny that they were after him. Obviously the embargo would have had something to do with it.
My point is that there is still a stigma surrounding him because of his past discretions which is going to make most clubs think twice and probably not worth the gamble especially at prem level.

i think if the premiership comes knocking then he will go without even having to think about it. The one thing we we may have against other championship sides is the way all opposing fans have treated him and the very boring and predictable song that is dragged out everytime. Having spoken to him briefly after games i feel he really does appreciate how the club and especially the fans have given him a chance. I am hoping out of the three he stays but if he goes, like when Denis Wise was here, I have seen if only for brief time a superbly tallented footballer in a sky blue shirt and wish him all the best (unless he goes up the M69!!!!).

I can see Marlon King moving on too. The frustration is that a club of our size should be able to match the ambitions of such a player. We need serious investment.

He could do a hell of alot worse than staying. We gave him his chance to get back into football and could well become a sky blue legend if he stays for a season or two.

For Marlon i guess he has to balance a few things - the fans have embraced him from day 1, he seems genuinely happy and now we know thorn is in charge next year he knows we'll be playing decent and enjoyable football.

On the other hand our financial future hangs in the balance and without investment thorn will do a great job to get us above midtable - at 31 years old when you're head and shoulders above most players in this league would you be satisifed with this level of quality and ambition?

He's right to seriously consider his options - maybe sign a 1 year deal in the knowledge that he could jump ship in Jan if its not going well.

Id love him to stay with us, with the new formation and the way we've been playing under AT we could pose a real threat next year in this league. The Ricoh is gradually filling up and the players surely must feel that there is a real buzz about the place. I hope King stays but if he doesn't good luck to him, his goals have been worth so much to our survival this year.
