Had a good pre season. People saying he was good cover for Dabo even though not his natural position.

At Sunderland struggled. But in a team that was misfiring and struggling to find a flow. Didnt make any drastic errors just struggled.

Dabo benefitted from formation change and support of Tavares. That wouldn't have worked from the start.

I hope we don't beat the lad with a stick and write him off after one game (which our fans have form for). Playing in front of 40 plus thousand was a new experience for him and he will be better for it.

I think Josh Eccles is a great prospect for us. I think he can break through as a midfielder and as a RWB and FB.

No player delivers every week. But players like Josh Eccles and Kasey Palmer need support and time and a run of games to find their feet.

I feel our fans can be a bit brutal on social media and live off snap shots rather than look at the bigger picture.

Not his best game yesterday, (not the only one though) but he'll learn from the experience. Playing him at LWB isn't doing him any favours.
He's a great player to have on the bench, and would be cover for Sheaf, and would probably be a better option than Allen if we need to see a game out.

We’re not writing him off. It was clear after 45 mins he was having an off game though. Whilst we shouldn’t write him off. We shouldn’t just stick with him for the whole time because he’s young.

hes a good youngster, but yesterday showed he isn’t quite ready yet

We need to be more patient with our young players as they progress

tbf, Hobo started it off wanting to turn him into a LWB!

Did I ? Must have been a brain fart or did I mix up his opponent.? The lad he was up against whoever he was - was good. I knew Eccles was on the right even if I didnt say it appologies for any confusion 😁

I mean, that's confidence in the lad I suppose ;)

Eccles will be a good player this year. But he was poor yesterday. Yes out of position but we had zero joy going forward down the right yesterday as he made the wrong decisions constantly. He'll learn for it and have better games.

He just looked that yard out of position, and second too slow in reactions. But he's young, first game of the season, we never really did truly click into gear yesterday so think that could be the worst he will ever be, you'd take an off game only being that bad. If everyone else performed it would have helped cover it up too.

Hope he stays fit and gets more time and experience to keep improving.

I like how him and Godden have been pretty humble and honest. I hope he gets a go in his prefered positon though for his confidence as he has looked much better in the middle of the park dictating the play.

Hopefully we don't ruin his confidence by playing him out of position too much. In League One maybe but in the Championship small mistakes get punished.

I fear they may do an Isaac Osbourne on him and maybe Burroughs.

I've never understood the clamour or the criticism tbh. He's looked okay against poor preseason opposition but needs to play regular football and I'd get him out on loan.

I don't know why some assume he'll simply step straight into the level when many others we had who even did well at L1 struggled to bridge the gap to this level. He might be good, he might not but looked well out of his depth yesterday and was partly at fault for the goal, although Moore should've stayed on his line.

As with all players I'll support him, but I think if we get propper cover he can go and play to get some L1 experience.

If we play him in his actual position then I think he will show that he is in fact ready, he is no way a starting RWB, may be good cover in that position, but we shouldn’t be playing him there when we have J.Burroughs and Lusala coming through who are specialists in that position

Right back to DM is a fairly well trodden development path. Gus did it for a start. Allows a younger player to make mistakes in a less critical area of the pitch.

Like any goal conceded it is not one persons fault.
Bidwell, cross came in too easily, Moore went walkabout, Hyam should have read cross better was underneath it too much. Eccles should have challenged more.

Sunderland coaches will no doubt pick things apart and highlight three players who should have prevented Gyokeres even getting an opportunity to cut in and shoot.

As for Eccles. He's actually older than you think, but MR has always rated him. This is how breakthrough season, depending on no injuries.

MR said at the end of the season something along the lines of, he can be as good as he wants to be, but he needs to decide what we wants to do. Suggested to me a potential lack of confidence?

Out of position yesterday and he’s certainly not a Dabo type of rwb, won’t see the best of him until he has a run in midfield.

Just feel when I see Eccles play there’s a good player for the future but always appears to play within himself.

And some players do that all the time. Just play it safe and coast through games. Sometimes you need players to be brave and take the occassional risk.
