Huddersfield striker Jon Stead has turned down a loan to Coventry.

Sources in the West Midlands say the League I side wanted the 30-year-old, who returned to his hometown club from Bristol City last summer but has struggled to establish himself second time around.

However Stead, who made a late appearance from the bench in Town's 2-1 Championship defeat at Bournemouth on Tuesday, rejected the chance of regular football.

Walsall are also believed to be keen, but given Stead's response to Coventry, Town manager Mark Robins' previous club, the Saddlers seem unlikely to succeed in any bid.

Stead was linked with Sheffield United, one of his former clubs, at the start of the January transfer window, and Robins has said the 6ft 3in frontman needs to be playing regular football.

Having come through the Town academy, Stead burst onto the first-team scene and scored 24 goals to earn a £1.25m move to then-Premier League Blackburn in February 2004.

He has also played for Sunderland and Ipswich, and had a loan spell at Coventry from the Suffolk club in 2010.

He signed a two-year contract in his return to Town, but having suffered an injury in pre-season, has had to make do with six starts, eight appearances from the bench, and one goal.

That was the clincher in October's 3-2 home win over Leeds, Town's opponents at Elland Road on Saturday

I have no memory of us having him on loan before.

Edit: Cancel that, he scored when we beat Peterborough 1-0 away and I got kicked out of that pub on a boat.

HE scored a nice goal at the Ricoh too, I seem to recall. No loss really though.

I'd have to say I am slightly relieved, we had him when Coleman was manager and then the knob scored against us the season we were relegated at the game with Bristol City at Ashton Gate..

Actually, I always thought Stead was a reasonably tidy player, and I think he'd do well at this level. Quite intelligent, decent touch, reasonable finisher.

There's probably more than one reason why he doesn't want to come here - again despite my dislike for SISU this isn't perhaps one to lay directly at their door.

It is starting to get a little worrying though - if we don't replace Clarke with someone half-way decent then I think our season is over, and it wouldn't be unfair to start asking questions of our owners. What would worry me more is losing Pressley as a result of that...

Weather or not he is great, the fact we were after him presumably means Pressley/waggot feels it was one of our best options, so that makes it failing bad news.

Good, hes utter shite. Why aren't we looking at non league talent? some decent young players who'll cost next to nothing.

I agree bullet dodged .. not bothered that he's not coming. That said how bad does it look that someone we aren't bothered about ... turns us down !!!
