Miserable cunts. Funny is funny. I don't care the subject, cancer is very close to home but love jokes about anything. The key is knowing what's a joke and its intentions versus what's simply nasty to be a prick. If you don't know then you probably are a prick and I make no apology for that. Nothing is off limits with me and if it is with you don't watch. I'm certain some people just like being offended on behalf of others.

This idea that “nothing is off limits” is just nonsense. Try putting some dead baby jokes in the Earlsdon thread and see how far people’s ideological commitment to comedy goes.

It’s easy to puff your chest out and say how nothing offends you when you’re not affected, just as it’s easy to clutch your pearls and claim offense at something you’ve never seen just because it’s an emotive subject for you. Either way - being absolutist about it is silly.

It's a very tricky one. I remember Ricky Gervais saying something about when he does a gig, if there are 1,000 people there watching him, some people in the audience will have recently lost a loved one. Should he then not make any jokes about death?

It's hard to get the balance right.

That’s a thread about a dead child, it’s a bit different context from “I’m watching a show by a stand up comedian known for edgy humour”.

Yes. I love blowjobs but I know not to get one at my nan’s funeral. Context matters.

Not sure she would be able to put much effort into it at that point. Pointless anyway.

Yeah, it's all about context as always. People have seen one clip from that Jimmy Carr show it seems and now think he's inciting violence against gypsies. I think people just don't seem to really get comedy and context any more.

You do have consensus, but if I walk up to you and call you a f*****g dirty ****** who should get back where you belong (I appreciate in this particular instance, it's Earlsdon, but you can see where I'm going!), then that's my right to say that, no?

It's not censorship to stop free speach from encompassing things that marginalise, trivialise, and Other certain groups, along with hitting deep into their psyche and legacy of hurt.

Now as it happens, personally I don't think this encompasses that, but free speach is not, and can never be, an absolute.

This is why it's such a knife edge debate, (one I find fascinating) when does offering people protection from offence turn into censorship?

And how often do you see free speech advocates failing to defend the rights of someone to say something they disagree with?

And it will always intensify when there's a new medium for comunication as we're seeing with social media.

I think the segments of the jokes before and after that have been cut off in the clip going round matter as well.

It’s a bit about the most offensive jokes he’s written. So that expectation is set with the audience that we’re playing a game of “who can be most offensive” similar to CaH or whatever. He doesn’t just come out with it in a run of one liners. He then deconstructs the joke afterwards, again framing it as an exercise in joke construction not a sincere belief he holds.

As far as offensive speech goes it’s as well contained and contextualised as possible.

I think plenty of people still ‘get it’. Dave Chapelle did great out of his Netflix controversy, I’m sure Carr will do the same. The fact that a major company like Netflix is still pumping this stuff into hundreds of millions of homes isn’t the best advert for the dreaded cancel culture. In fact Michael Richards is the only stand-up I can think of whose career ended from trying to be too ‘edgy’ on stage, and that was 15 years ago. Are there others?

Lets be honest if you are a fan of Michael Mcyntyre you are unlikely to enjoy a night with Frankie Boyle.

In the 80’s I’d have little sympathy with someone suffering from PTSD having attending a Chubby Brown gig if their idea of edgy humour normally was Bernie Clifton

Imagine Chubby Brown on Netflix

It's like Love Thy Neighbour, it was out before I was born but from what I have seen the whole thing is actually taking the piss out of the racist bloke. However if you show 1 clip of it rather than the whole thing you miss the context and think it's American Histoty X.

Yes Jack Smethurst said that and he was a very different individual to the character - it was a poor mans Alf Garnett - someone who’d never see now even though Warren Mitchell is hardly going to be a racist

With Michael Richards it was less his act offending and more him losing his mind and having a complete breakdown on stage, you could almost pinpoint the part where he calms back down and realises he's just fucked his career. Still an absolutely bizarre watch

If you feel that the way to get a laugh is to trivialise the murder of 500,000+ people then it’s probably because you’re an unfunny c**t to begin with.

Supposed "comedian" Roy Chubby Brown, known for his racist, homophobic and sexist "jokes", has had his upcoming Sheffield show axed.

It's all about context though isn't it, as has already been said.

Jimmy Carr must have cracked (or made aside quips) around 150-200 jokes in this show. This is just 1 of 200.

Point is, he made jokes about everything. You would have more of a point if he felt he had to resort to this type of joke as the only way to get a laugh.

No-one seems offended by the other 199 wise cracks.

I’d be interested to see if there was the same reaction if it was a joke related to a mass loss of British lives in a war or terrorist attack, I’d imagine they’d be outrage on this thread.

MP’s are employed to represent their constituents. If their constituents who are from this group feel this is offensive it is actually their duty to say this.

Didn't Ricky Gervais upset some people with his joke about an imaginary conversation between Hitler & Nietzsche about the Holocaust? I'll admit I laughed at that one despite the subject matter because of its absurdity

I'm sure the people upset by this would be giggling at the one about anti vaxxers as well. It was funny. Why wouldn't they?

They are just going off one edited snippet. You could do that with almost anything and make it look much more offensive when you remove the context.

Maybe it is about context - but that doesn’t take away from the fact it’s in really poor taste. I can’t say I’m offended but it’s not a joke that is relevant to me, and being outraged and calling for him to cancelled ends up being counter productive, as he’ll get an even bigger platform to whine about his ‘unjust’ treatment.
If this is the level he has to operate at to get laughs I’ll just give it a wide berth.
