Didn't you rate Panzo and thought we should sign him a couple of years before we unfortunately did?

Yeah believe it or not I’m not actually applying for the Head of Transfers position. I’d just like us to find someone better than Austin.

I don’t think Nick wants to play left back Saturday either, probably just wants a different professional from Dasilva.

Don’t rate him never have and never will. I think the fact he’s had more to spend than anyone in charge of transfers in our history is skewing your perception of him. I know we’re at the point where people are just farming likes but for those that aren’t trolls and are genuinely curious:

That’s championship spend last three seasons. Divide the total spend (red) by the number of players bought. Only Leicester are close in per player spend to us really and they were in the PL for some of those seasons. The others with huge spends are mostly teams in the PL at some point.

We really haven’t over performed our spend massively and it backs up Doug’s feeling that we should be up the top of the league. In terms of absolute spend only Boro are close and they got 50% more players for their cash (and are also up the top).

OMG you have used transfer market

Not only are the values nonsense - as I already showed the other day - you do realise “arrivals” include players like Ryan Howley and Kai Andrews when their loan period expires

This literally is comedy gold

Though those figures are questionable given the source, even if they are not, I’m not sure how you interpret that as anything other than; we’ve done pretty well with our transfer business?

Ryan Howley actually featured three times as arrivals in the period quoted

Isn't the story of football clubs in this country that most of them consistently under perform vs. what they spend on transfers? so if we're doing as well as we should and getting value from players, that's a good job being done.

I think you're missing a big thing. It's known we don't pay the wages lots of clubs do, parachute clubs or not. All data shows that wages paid is the biggest driver of performance in football. In that respect, I think we over perform.

Last season I was of the opinion that Lampard achieved par with the squad, albeit he had to recover from a poor start. He's exceeded that until Xmas. Final chunk of the season will decide if he's over performing spend and wages.

Out of interest @shmmeee, you were very vocally anti-Lampard before he joined, and for a fair bit after, essentially throwing all toys out of the pram in the online sense (we all deal with stuff in different ways, it’s kool!).

But in essence you are also suggesting that the players we have recruited are not very good, which is an opinion of course.

So either you must think Lampard is doing / has done a blinding job for about a year (second half of last season, first half of this one) with poor quality players. Or maybe the opposite? It’s a genuine question, I’m not sure exactly where you stand.

I personally think Lampard has done a little bit of a better job than the actual ability of our players so far.

the reset button has been hit. we are top, but our lead has pretty much gone.
so now we find out who's good, and who's not. players and staff alike.
we have as close to a fully fit team as it practically possible at this time of year. (inc rudi carrying his shoulder, and others still not quite 100% match fit. but that's the norm for teams, right?)

so, come on guys, shit or get off the pot.

Check my avatar for around a year and the thread that goes with it. I think despite me not thinking the football is great his results speak for themselves and he’s probably doing the right tactics for the squad and level we are at.

I am worried he’s lost his head a bit recently, but I’d say that about everyone involved with the club. These are head losing times.

The appointment concerned me at first - I wanted Kim Hellberg! But I was willing to give him time.

I think he came in and looked to solidify us and waited for a few players to come in / come back, assessed the squad eventually opting for his preferred formation.

I think his formation matches what our personnel do “well” and plays to our strengths. Unfortunately, probably like you, I think we need to be a little less footballing in away games and just more horrible. I don’t think that is something we particularly know how to do / plays to our strengths though.

I think we probably have a “top 6 deck” but hopefully Lampard can keep us in the top 2.

I mean most seasons let’s be honest we’d be about third or fourth right now. We’re lucky the parachute clubs are all underperforming but we’re the best of the rest which is what we should hope for and he’s delivering.

What I don’t get is that our flexibility was our strength earlier on in the season and recently it seems we are too inflexible. I think a big chunk of blame goes to the players who let’s face it have bottled things a few times over multiple managers now but Lampard has also never been here as a manager and we don’t know if he has that ability to get the group back on track. Though that’s not all on him.

If we were third or fourth right now we will still be out performing our playing cost budget. We are a lower half team based on playing budget.

Im not sure we are anymore really , we are outperforming our budget but i doubt very much we are a bottom half team in that regards

I think that’s right
Lampard should be more flexible but many players are making individual errors and others are way below their previous levels

Well it could be a factor in our recent drop off in form, who knows though.

I've said several times that Frank & his coaching team have done a remarkable job getting our squad to the top of the League.
Hopefully the new singings (particularly Esse &Onyeka) will have a similar effect to Matt Grimes last year.

Define budget. I have no idea what our wage budget is but rumours are multiple players on £20k+ a week, in terms of transfer spend absolutely not, we are top six.

Playing Budget … a combination of incoming player costs and salaries plus existing player costs minus outgoing player transfer fees and salaries.

I'd put our net spend on transfers around the top half.

As for wages, the 3 recent PL clubs, Sheffield United, Birmingham & Wrexham will be spending more. Then Norwich / Bristol City are known for inflated wage bills.

Not that any of that is a bad thing as I prefer us to keep within our limits.

Far be it from me to defend an argument based on Transfermarkt data, but surely over-counting the number of arrivals would mean the cost-per-player would in reality be even higher?

The biggest and most obvious argument against Austin’s signings being rubbish would be that we’re currently top of the league…
