Exactly. He presumably thought his money could be better spent.

He obviously didn't realise that Bamford would have raced back to plug the gaps in midfield and defence
He would have been a better outball for our defenders. I think youre missing the point

It doesn't work quite like that but it's fair to say Dean Austin and his scouts do the majority of the recruitment/identifying possible signings work.
When the players finish training and have lunch before leaving for home Frank and his coaching team are at Ryton for several more hours.
He also arrives a couple of hours before the players rock up

It’s not a slight at anyone but Austin, who I think is a poor scout. I just don’t agree with a system where a manager doesn’t have full control over the resources available to do the job. I didn’t agree with King blocking Bamford either. Give the manager a budget and let him use it how he sees fit, otherwise you can’t hold him fully accountable for results. As it is Austin seems to be unaccountable.

I would expect Lampard to be telling him what profile of player he wants then trusts Austin to find it.

We have seen both the sublime and the ridiculous from these players, they can produce stunning and dreadful football depending on their mental state. Grimes was signed for his consistency but even he has fallen way off his standards. How much of this is attributable to Austin? I genuinely don’t know.

For me since he took over the players we’ve signed have generally had poor technique or a fatal physical flaw and have had poor mentality as well as generally being at best costing roughly what you’d expect. I don’t think we’ve unearthed a single gem and have overpaid for some very average players.

Markelo and Onyeka look to be two more with terrible technique and a seemingly inflated price tag tbh. He’s the one I’d move heaven and earth to replace asap if we are going up because like fuck would I give him £100m.

They have all been good technical players imo. The mentality however is a house of cards and when it goes the technique and physicality goes off a cliff with it. There has always been a yellow streak with this group, it looked over the summer that Lampard and his staff had knocked it out of them. They haven’t, and if they haven’t nobody ever will.

Onyeka however is not like any of the other players we’ve gone for.

Well they didn’t and he isn’t. Robins was though.
I think it’s clear from the subsequent results achieved from largely the same playing squad that replacing the manager rather than the players or the chief scout was the correct call in that scenario.

The Austin signings were - and largely continue to be - more than good enough.

Simms and Wright for the money we paid have dreadful technique. Simms in particular. Torp is OK but I’m fitter than him and my 10 year old is more physical than Sakamoto. Woolfenden, Thomas and Kitching are truly dreadful defenders. EMC is very hit and miss. Just not what I expect from a bunch of players costing £4m to £8m.

We are a very workman like team and play pretty poor football for a team at the top of the league that’s cost £70m to assemble.

Compared to what Badlan assembled for a fraction of the cost. We are not ten times that team despite costing ten times as much.

Christ we've had back to back losses and now the side is shit and Austin's recruitment is bad again. This place is genuinely incredible.

The last two losses are pretty much both on Frank - we've nicked goals in both despite looking overrun in midfield and he's sat on his hands both times. It's all very weird because earlier in the year (Pompey/Boro) he made pre and in-game tactical tweaks that won us points. Not really sure what's going on with him.

We didn’t sign Simms and Wright for their technique, and with all due respect to your 10 year-old, I’m not sure he’d hold up under some of the challenges that Sakamoto takes on a weekly basis and continue to deliver.

I’ve not claimed he has zero involvement. But everything from the club suggests it’s mostly about trusting Dean Austin and maybe the manager gives a once over at the end then Doug gives the final yes or no. Frank having a zoom chat doesn’t really change that opinion.
The manager still gets to say yes or no.

You'd never believe we are top of the league. You've lost the plot.

I would because as I’ve posted before we’ve spent more than pretty much everyone else bar the parachute clubs in recent years, and on fewer players. I just don’t think we’ve got a huge amount of quality in return. We’ve got roughly what we paid for.

Noah, that was a player they had scouted found out he was about to sign elsewhere and acted with now and the future in mind. FL explained that very clearly and im not sure why this is not understood.

Don’t rate him never have and never will. I think the fact he’s had more to spend than anyone in charge of transfers in our history is skewing your perception of him. I know we’re at the point where people are just farming likes but for those that aren’t trolls and are genuinely curious:

IMG_5904.jpeg

That’s championship spend last three seasons. Divide the total spend (red) by the number of players bought. Only Leicester are close in per player spend to us really and they were in the PL for some of those seasons. The others with huge spends are mostly teams in the PL at some point.

We really haven’t over performed our spend massively and it backs up Doug’s feeling that we should be up the top of the league. In terms of absolute spend only Boro are close and they got 50% more players for their cash (and are also up the top).

Net spend is a much better metric than spend per player.

Stoke for example have spent £24m in the last 3 years?

Didn't you rate Panzo and thought we should sign him a couple of years before we unfortunately did?
