Been there 3 times and each one I haven't felt safe. It's due to the cowardly acts of fans from another football club.

We were only in Padova on business for a day so most of the time was spent in a factory in an industrial area and a brief meal out

Local colleagues reckoned there was some connection with the Romanian travellers who lived in the man made shacks on the banks of the Po.

roma go through as group winners over english champions......
really does feel like serie a is back now.
roma juve through, napoli with a big chance and if not europa, lazio and ac milan through in europa too
league is very competitive and with inter ac having big money it gices italy 5 big teams now, i have a feeling they are in for a boom like the premier league has currently.

I'd like to think so, but you know Italy is always only one small step away from chaos! Probably AC Milan going to be a casualty of overspending and unscrupulous owners...
Good to see some teams looking like they might step up and increase the competition. Fiorentina always look decent but can't quite make the jump. Sampdoria look decent this year. Bologna play great football but have the traditional "soft underbelly".... And for me, good to see Parma competing for a return to Serie A.

I love Italy. Have been to Lake Garda, Lake Como, Tuscany, Venice, Rome, Florence and many places in between and on the coast.
Rome, I must say was a pleasant surprise. For a capital city it was heaps nicer than I was expecting.
Never been to a Serie A game, but have always wanted to. I did read up a lot about the attendances dropping and I think that has been true to an extent. Something to do with modern football and attitudes towards it and the new stadiums though I think. It has been a similar story in parts of Spain.
Here is a table of the averages last season, some pretty low scorers there!

It gets worse when viewed as a percentage too, Juventus are the only side nearing a full house and only a handful others there would go over the 50% mark. You can see why the sides want to move away from city-owned behemoths and go for the more enclosed stadiums like Juventus have and Roma have just had approved (looks a right fancy pants - Photos)

The only places I've been to in Italy (many years ago) were Diano Marina and Portofino, both on the Italian Riviera.
The places and scenery were great, but the Italian people not very friendly.

I think they are just very blunt. If they don't like you, they let you know about it. Even in much of Eastern Europe it isn't that blunt!

The country has become much more open to tourists and other countries over the last couple of decades. Presumably you had a go at speaking Italian?
I'm off to Florence on friday.
Original plan had been to go to Fiorentina vs Pisa.... a pretty heated derby, and a big clash at the bottom of the table.
Alas its been moved to monday night (whether for tv or due to the trouble surrounding the first match in Pisa), and thats when i'm flying back home.
Plan is now to go to watch Livorno on the saturday. I remember them being a european level team early 2000's but they're in Serie C now.
Will try and get in the Curva Nord..... i know their ultras have a notorious reputation due to their politics..... i don't particularly care for any politics, i've been in the curvas at Hellas Verona & Lazio (right), Bologna (left) and hopefully now Livorno (extreme left Russian supporters), but should be an interesting day.

Ive been to Fiorentina and Lazio in the last few years and enjoyed both. I found it very different to the crowd experience at home, which is a big part of why i wanted to go. Having said that most of the Lazio game the chant was just Juve, Juve vaffanculo (fuck off/go fuck yourself i believe), but with lots of flags being waved.
The other thing i noticed is how far behind the retailing is over there, club shops were more like ours in the 90s for both teams (Roma's was pretty decent though).

BBC Alba - The Scottish Gaelic channel, Have announced they are showing eight Serie A games from now until the end of the season. I think mainly focussing on games featuring Scottish players like McTominay and Lewis Ferguson at Bologna. I think the commentary may be in gaelic but could be wrong.

I watched the Torino-Bologna game on Sunday and the commentary was a mix of English and Gaelic so I couldn't get on with it. On the massive plus side the opening credits are a thing of beauty

Oh the memories of channel 4 on a saturday morning, James Richardson with his expresso and copy of La Gazzetta dello Sport. Years of watching the likes of Ravanelli and Vialli... when they arrived in england i was like "these gods are real?"

Went to Livorno on saturday afternoon.
Gorgeous sunny and warm day.
Had no issues getting a ticket in the curva, and getting in ok.
Quite an intimidating place, nothing like English grounds..... huge glass barrier/fence to keep people off the pitch.... graffiti everywhere under the stand, declaring hatred for Pisa/Ascoli/and a number of other teams, and warnings not to take photos.
Spent the first half off to the side and managed to get a few photos. 2nd half i worked my way front and centre, phone firmly in pocket.
Typical Italian atmosphere.... drums, megaphones, bombs, huge flags and banners.
Game was fairly typical as well.... bad-tempered, stop-start. Livorno won 1-0
Livorno is an interesting city, very rough around the edges, without being stunningly beautiful like Florence.
