As for the Slade/Mowbray blame thing, who is more at fault, the guy who took over with us in the bottom four, or the guy that took us there?

Yep, by all means blame Sisu for this, that and the other, but that squad out there this season is not League One standard.

Didn't agree with Venus on many things, but he was right in this one. These players are not good enough for League One.

Slade addressed the back line and also brought Beavon in, but it's all kind of feeling a bit to late to save us.

how many pts adrift were we when mowbray was here , when venus was here and when slade is currently?

We've had 16 new players through the door this season, thats a lot and whilist i expect many here to say thats what its like in Div 1 for all club, can't help but think overhauling a squad every season risks poor recruitment once in a while Jan 2016 and Summer 2016 were both poor. Vincelot to fund Turnbull - still makes no sense, surely some of the Maddison fee could have been used and we could have kept on to a first team regular. Was Turnbull like jody jones seen as an investment for the future thinking about potential fee in a few years rather than impact on the team now. After Saturday's performance I don't think Turnbull will ever generate a fee - very poor and slow.

And didn't Mowbray take over in the first place with the team in the bottom four and in very real danger of relegation? 2 years on we've come full circle, what's the constant?

3 of his worst decisions in the summer was letting Martin and Phillips go, and selling Vincelot. Not saying Phillips and Martin were world beaters and yes, Martins been injured but he put himself in a position where he basically had to replace 2 more players then he needed to, and that led to sellint Vincelot in order to bring in martins replacement who is worse than martin.

I don't think mowbray is our worst manager, but I can't see how anyone can argue that he has contributed to us being where we are now. His record in 2016 was awful something like a 20% win ratio in the league.

Yep. It stands up as a very, very poor return. We were shocking from Christmas and then started this season abysmally.

What's the point in being top in November or top 6 by Christmas if you end up finishing 8th?

Weird seeing people justify how well he did based on less than half a season which amounts to nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The summer recruitment was utterly baffling.

As much as I hate Sisu...Mowbray and Venus (no idea how he can still be in a job) conducted one of the most shocking recruitment drives in the summer.

I thought Andy Thorn's summer signings were one of the worst...at least he got some bodies through the door.

If you look at the stats most managers actually have very similar records and hover around the 32 - 34% win margin.

Mowbrays record is comparable to the likes of Neal and Reid - it's almost a mirror image of Pressley - a big high followed by a crashing low - but Pressley achieved his high in far more trying circumstances.

The fact is Mowbray is an experienced manager and has experienced big slumps in form before so you'd think he would have learnt from those experiences.

His permenant signing record is very very poor.

Lameries
Cole
Reid
Henderson
Ramage
Ghadzev
Jones
Bigiramana
Fortune
Turnbull

These are a few examples. Only Vincelot was a success.

He refused to address the goalkeeping situation.

His summer decision making showed the plot had been lost (really most owners would have dumped him by February). Tudgay, a player never used the prior season, was retained along with Ricketts who clearly had lost his legs. Phillips and Martin were no great shakes but were league 1 players and they were let go. Bigiramana was retained after an abysmal showing in most games under his loan spell.

No one can get away from the stark fact we were top in November and collapsed. No one can get away from the fact that big bad Joy Seppalla has, to my knowledge, not owned clubs where this had previously been his Achilles heel.

The likes of Pressley, Neal and Reid operated under equally difficult circumstances (check mcginnity and his asset stripping when Reid arrived) and performed at the same level.

He failed spectacularly. He is obviously not the worst but when he looks behind him the queue is disappointingly small.

Mowbray failed in his alleged targets and brought in very sub standard players....failed to win then walked, even his mate Venus managed to get some wins with the same squad...Mowbray got the sack from Celtic, even Strachan looked like a demi god up there so even they seen through him...sorry you cannot hide the facts I actually liked TM for a while and to an extent I still do but bloody hell he aint done no good for our team regardless of SISU's failings Mowbray failed us quite spectacularly

Could be. Could be Venus more so than Mowbray.

On of the things that worried me about Mowbray when he came was that he said he knew nothing of League One.

They definitely picked the wrong players on the whole.

Neither has TM. The thread asked if he was one of our worst managers. Pick your words wisely ;-)

Back on topic, as others have pointed out, we always seem to employ shite managers. Whilst all other clubs employ decent managers with the odd bad egg, we employ shite managers and the odd good egg.

It depends how you define worst manager. Otis quoted a statistic earlier about biggest drop in league position, so statistically he might be.

Others have quoted the appalling summer (and to an extent January) recruitment, which I think we can all admit was appalling and cannot be passed off as SISU's fault (we might not all agree on the latter....).

But equally, how many other managers have recruited awfully? How many other managers have overseen an awful run of form? How many other managers have seemingly lost the plot tactically? Lots.

Of those, there's very few who gave us the highs TM did, or recruited the players he did. It was the most exciting 6 months of my Coventry supporting life; we all had hope for the first time in a long time.

Yes he ultimately failed, and it ended in a low, but the only reason we see it that way, is because he actually gave us a high.

He's not my favourite manager, and he certainly had to go following his awful recruitment and bizzare tactics, but to suggest he is the worst manager in our history is nonsense.

Yep. All I am saying is that statistically if we go down he is going to look like a very bad manager.

Last season we should have been playoffs minimum. Then this season we totally underperformed.

I know CC4L thinks he would have turned it round, but he recruited the wrong players and gave us a really poor squad.

No evidence to say he would have turned it round. The players clearly have shown they are not good enough and we still need strengthening.

Without re-reading the entire thread, based on some of the extremists on this site, I'm sure someone has. Probably followed by another stating he was the best.

And then at some point arriving at the usual SISU/Wasps/Council debate.

Back on thread, we all know that the recruitment in the summer went badly wrong, and we've been left with a young squad that's been bullied in many games this season. I was also worried by Mowbray's demeanour during matches. At the Fleetwood away game this season, we were struggling in the second half as Fleetwood got amongst us. Rosler spent the whole match on the touch line encouraging, cajoling and instructing his players, Mowbray sat on the bench with his hands in his pockets - he looked like he either didn't know what to do, or he'd given up. I felt our young team badly needed someone on the touchline batting for them, but there was nothing. On the plus side, we had a great season up to December, he tried to play a passing game, and he walked away without a pay off. But what happened from December onwards was abject failure and that's how most fans will remember his time with us.

Very good assessment... I sat near the dug outs at Fleetwood that day. Think he only got up off the bench twice. JC was the only vocal one that day. TM looked beat.

My reading of the lack of the right players coming in in the transfer window was Mowbray told Venus the players he wanted in Venus tried to get them they probably said give us time to think about it(hoping better offers would come in) and TM and MV waited too long ,left themselves with players that were second or third choses. In January I think it was SUSI not putting up enough cash to get the quality for the extra push to get in the play offs or better
